Type 1 Diabetes for 47 healthy years. Insulin Pump (Medtronic Paradigm Revel 723), Humalog or Apidra.

John Conrod, Medtronic MiniMed Ambassador
Medtronic Diabetes Official Site:

NOTE: As a volunteer MiniMed Ambassador, I receive promotional items and educational material to use and share as I see fit. No monetary compensation has taken place and any opinions expressed by me are honest and reflect my actual experience.

Despite genetically Brittle Type 1 Diabetes, close attention and careful self-management along with frequent consultation with my Medical and peer support teams, has helped me avoid all but minor complications from long term Diabetes mellitus. My October 2017 HbA1c was 6.8, with perfect lab results according to my doctor.

Had my annual Diabetes Retina Dilatation. Ophthalmologist was amazed to see no sign of Retinopathy! No Glaucoma.

Cataracts OTO progressed, 50% in dominant right eye 30% in left eye. Cataract Surgery with permanent lens implants, October-November 2017. Turns out it was covered by both Medicare and my AARP Medicare Complete United Health Care supplemental insurance, including my HMO option.

I chose Near Distance since much of my time is spent reading, on the computer, or smartphone. I only need glasses for distance. Have the new prescription: No line bifocal Transitions, anti-reflection, scratch resistance, UV protection. Just need to get to Costco Optical. Can use 10 month old frames so only $160.

First time without glasses since Second Grade Elementary School! :D

I actively participate in Diabetes Peer Support groups internationally, founding three Facebook groups: Diabetes Peer Support, Brittle Type 1 Diabetes, and Clinical Trials.

You can find me in other support groups including the American Diabetes Foundation, JDRF, and the International Diabetes Foundation, to name a few. Diabetes "cyber-friend" networks are truly world-wide. Just do a web search for Diabetes.

Spark People's Diet and Nutrition Tracker for Android and Spark site have helped improve control immeasurably. Food Carb content and tracking my daily nutritional intake are at my literal fingertips wherever there is a WiFi or data connection. My BMI and BDI remain in the normal for seven years. Several years years at my maintenance weight goal

Carbohydrate tracking is essential using my Medtronic Paradigm Revel 723 Insulin Pump, and easy easily accomplished using the Nutrition Tracker on my Android SmartPhone or on the Web! The SP Android app is fantastic. I use it many times a day with my Diabetes tracking program, SINOVO's outstanding SiDiary 6.

I've joined several Diabetes related Spark Teams, and recommend that you explore them. There are Spark Teams for almost every interest or goal -- or start one yourself.

My search for better Diabetes control is much easier with appropriate technology and life-long learning. I'm here to learn from others, and to share my insights and experiences on The Path.

I found reading Richard Bernstein M.D.'s "The Diabetes Solution" to be very helpful in learning about Insulin Resistance. Dr. Bernstein has had Type 1 diabetes since he has been twelve years old and he is a healthy 78. He uses a low carb diet, so a diet with 50% carbs wouldn't "fly" with him. He has wonderful lectures on YouTube.

I see you had a birthday in June. My brother's birthday is June 8th. The Gemini child is most often the baby in the family so she/he learns to talk early to be heard over the others. Gemini can have problems with the nerves and injuries to the hands/shoulders. Yoga is a great practice to help quiet the mind.
