Thank you for your concern and advice about my MIL. There is NO way she will be coming to live with us or even in a nursing home near us. For 30 years she lived with SIL (never married). They traveled together and generally had an good, active life. Now she is 96 and cannot get out of bed by herself. She weighs 200 pounds. She needs nursing home care. SIL is a doctor who knows the medical community well. MIL has church people who visit her.
Sometimes she knows exactly where she is and why. Other times not. Sometimes she accepts the situation and behaves nicely. Other times she gets angry throws food and tries to hit people. If she could walk, this would be really dangerous. Her upper body is still quite strong.
It's a good facility - a 4 hour drive for us. We will visit once a month or more if the situation warrants. This is not the time to uproot her to new surroundings even though SIL would be very happy to remove herself from the situation.

Yes, I agree about the picture album. I made a "memory book" for my mother when she went into the home (the last 6 months of her life). I would look at it with her every day and talk about who was there and what was going on. However, my SIL doesn't agree. Everything we bring "disappears." They lived together since 1987 and only recently is MIL incapacitated. SIL's objective now is that DH & I should take her. It's a very sad situation all around. We visit once a month. The Best Western staff knows us on sight.

Thanks for your advice re MIL. I don't correct her although my SIL does. I talk to her about the past always starting with "remember when." One of the few things we ever did together was shopping the outlet stores. I said "remember when we came home with identical outfits like twins" and she laughed. I said I was going out to shop and when I returned she wanted to she what I bought. That was encouraging, although at 96 those moments are fewer and fewer.
