I'm back - again! Spark People served me so well the first time around that I've returned in hopes of getting back on track and losing these dang pounds once more. Everything was going splendidly for several years and then I started working as a freelance food writer and photographer (on top of my regular technical writing job) and let's just say - those media dinners are awesome until they end up on your butt. Alas! My "normal" eating, aka when I eat at home, has yet to alter that much but the excess of calories consumed for assignments has caused an embarrassing increase in my inches. It's incredibly challenging trying to balance the decrease in time and increase in cals. Often multiple times a week I am out for dinners or events or up late writing articles. This then cuts into both my evening workout time and my ability to get up early and do morning workouts. It's a catch 22 that is beyond frustrating, despite being rather delicious. Guh!

I am really struggling with losing weight (10-15 pounds depending on the week) while maintaining my professional obligations. First world problem? You bet. But still, it's a problem and I'm here to rely on my trusty old pal SP to see me through to a win. I tried out Weight Watchers last fall and it worked for a bit, then I got off track over the holidays (traveled for a month) and then they changed the whole program to a point where I did not agree with their nutritional premise anymore and couldn't get into a rhythm. So enough of that. Just trying to refocus on the simplicity of counting calories. It's worked for me time and time again.

I'm just truly anxious about how to navigate the world of food writing with weight loss - how do I count calories when I'm at a media dinner or brunch where 10 dishes come out of which I am expected to sample each? How can I possibly figure out the number of calories in that bite of chicken and waffle, that nibble of blueberry pancake, that hunk of lobster Benedict, the biscuits & gravy...etc. etc. that comes out at once? What?! Or the meal comprised entirely of pizzas (plural, yes). Or the multiple burgers I have to sample as part of an article about the best new burgers in town? All while trying to stay within a structured calorie range? I'm telling you, the struggle is REAL. Running a few miles a few times a week or doing a handful of spin classes a month are not going to do any good - though I do love them. I need something more drastic!

Nonetheless, I'm tired of feeling fat. It doesn't matter if my size 4/6 jeans still somehow fit. I'm convinced it's an evil ploy and someone is changing the numbers on a larger set and placing them in my closet. It makes no sense, when the measurements of my body that I take clearly show I've gained a few inches. I also still fit into size small and medium shirts, yet others are stretching painfully...which is a discrepancy that also makes me ponder. I can see the extra weight in photos and the mirror - and of course on the scale. I've always somehow been able to fit smaller sizes even when rationale says I shouldn't. I've learned to accept this. It's not about the sizes for me though, not when I feel and see the weight that needs to go. It's been an off and on again struggle for a few years now - this current weight issue, though it has fluctuated between an 8-15 pound loss goal.

Anyway, longest intro story short - I'm going to try very hard to at least be on track on the days I don't have to eat outside of my house. I'm hoping that if I can at least be on top of my food and exercise decisions when I have 100% control, then they will mitigate the days when things are outside of my abilities. Here's to hoping and trying and getting it done!

    We have been doing more hiking adventures than anything...we would still really like to get all of the gear to go backcountry hiking, but our budget says that will be awhile. I think we are getting snow shoes for Christmas this year...and planning to try skiing too! I haven't been running NEAR as much anymore, and I think that is the problem....I do plan to do another HM this summer though so hopefully that will get us motivated to start up again.

    I started a family Biggest Loser contest that runs to the end of the year. We have a pot going for the winner and it is up to $300! I don't really plan on winning that either (but the money would be nice) because I don't have as much to lose...its just great to see my family getting healthy! As a family we have already lost over 50 lbs! Not to mention, as soon as this contest is over, I am coordinating a BIggest Loser contest at our church too---busy busy busy! Hopefully that will keep me in check through winter anyway :) Glad to hear you are doing well and planning is coming along!

    I still struggle off and on but DH and I have tried a few different things and I am slowly (but surely) getting back to the self I was :)

    You're most welcome! Thanks for your blog comment! Kale chips are delicious and I highly recommend them! Just make sure you bake until they're all the way crispy but not burned (you don't want blackness like when you roast brussels!) I am intrigued that you're in maintenance mode!I'm basically there, too... Almost! Is it pretty manageable? I need maintenance tips :) hope your Monday went well! Vanessa
