Early on I knew it was important to exercise and eat healthy in order to live a happy life. Until I turned 40, I have maintained my weight in the "healthy range". I stopped watching the scale because I figured I ate pretty well and exercised regularly. Then, my clothes got uncomfortably tight. I shocked myself one day to find that I was 30 pounds over my goal weight!

I find that being overweight makes me sad and self conscious which makes it hard for me to enjoy daily activities. I loath the feeling of my clothes looking too tight or feeling frumpy. I feel pathetic that I can't enjoy having a good time because I have these uncomfortable feelings about myself. I realized that I am not going to be someone who can be content being overweight. I NEED to be fit for my personal pride, body comfort and emotional health!

I had an honest conversation with my husband about how I need to be fit in order to be a happy person. I asked for his help and support. He is also overweight by about 20 pounds. We know that being overweight sets us up for health problems, especially as we age. We realize that we both better trim down and learn how to maintain our goal weights in order to continue to lead a healthy life!

We realize that we need to track our food and exercise daily to lose one pound a week in order to reach our goal weights. Ugh, it's so far way! We are both working hard doing daily exercise and tracking our calories. Yesterday, he told me he really likes our healthy meals now. Luckily, we have the shared activity of golf and we can swing the club and walk the golf course for 5 hours on our days off together. Other days for cardio exercise, I do Zumba dance at the gym which I have always loved, so I am happy to have increased my zumba class days! My husband likes the Eliptical trainer because he finds it efficient time wise before work. Whatever activities you can find that you enjoy, you should do that!

Strength training has always been a missing piece for me. Now I am working on exercises to develop and retain my muscle tone. My minimum strength training goal is 3 set of arm weights (deltoids, biceps and triceps) and 200-300 crunches 4x/week. I really want a lean stomach and tone arms! Of course I want tone thighs too! Fortunately, I already get a lot of leg work in from doing squats and lunges during dance and even during golf too! I am also beginning to take more full body toning classes like yoga, circuit weights and Pilates. I am interested in having a routine where I use more of the weight equipment at the gym.

Now that I finally have my mind set and an action plan to lose all of this weight, I am impatient waiting for my one pound a week! It's a lot of work to take off 3500 extra calories each week. It is so much easier to add on weight! It's true that I already feel stronger, have better balance and feel more energetic. I look forward to the part where all the hard work I do over time pays off and I can feel good about the way I look! This will be days and days and weeks and weeks and months and months away!!!

Of course, I realize that everything I am finally doing now to lose weight is also my new PERMANENT lifestyle anyway! I have resigned to the fact that I need to track my food and exercise every day, or I will most definitely continue to gain weight as I age. I have made up my mind that I can not live with an overweight body because I just feel unhappy that way.

I have visualized my lifestyle and the way I want to look. You will find me slim, tone and tan on the golf course playing with my husband and friends; toning my muscles with weights and core exercises; sweating and dancing to awesome music lke a crazy person with friends in gym class; taking other gym classes to challenge myself and meet more fitness friends; hiking with friends; stretching and toning myself out in yoga; walking our dogs morning and night; walking other places whenever possible; riding my bike to the gym or grocery store or errands; taking an occasional jog; and constantly fixing nutritious food in my kitchen!

I will be working my 90% healthy habits with my 10% splurges. My splurges are usually red wine, a Moscow mule, mojito or glass of prosecco for my cocktail!

I am so looking forward to being fit and happy in 2018 and being fitnhappy4life!

    Thanks for the friend add. I've just added you back. Your page info could have been written by me except I didn't get smart about my weight until I was 61. After all, I was healthy, active and fit. Who cares what the scale said!
    Eventually I did care. I took it really slow and it took 11 months for me to lose 25 pounds, but I'm still here in maintenance for 7 years. I believe slow loss is the easiest to maintain. You are on the right track. Hang in there. The program works.
