I have been struggling for some time now to find the motivation to get back to healthy living habits and reduce my weight to healthy levels. The struggle is because that I have now been through this cycle of significant weighloss three times to only put it all back on. I know what hardwork and discipline it takes to lose it and despite how incredible I feel when I do, I am having a hard time to find the motivation to get started again. Very frustrating, but I now have a plan to get motivated.

In July 2009, I was on a canoe trip with my oldest son and some friends. I was portaging (carrying the canoe on my shoulders between lakes) and was really feeling the weight of the canoe as I climbed the trail. Then it hit me. The canoe weighed 52 lbs, the same weight I had just lost over the past year! It was an epiphany moment for me that I had been carrying a canoe around all the time before losing the weight! At that time I felt very motivated and proud.

Unfortunately the feeling faded over time and so did my healthy living habits. And over the course of three years I put the weight back on and now carrying a canoe again. My health has not been good as a result; blood pressure creeping up, sore joints, tired, heart burn at night, and my doctor recently informed me that I am "pre-diabetic". I will likely be diabetic in five years if I don't change my health habits.

So I am starting my "Lose the Canoe" campaign today. My goal is to make some simple changes in my daily eating and excercise habits to allow me to lose the weight and this time keep it off! I am using the symbol of the canoe to remind me and motivate me at times and places of weakness. I have put up little pictures of red canoes in the fridge, pantry, on the car dash (avoid drive thru's), and at my desk at work.

The canoe is a good motivating symbol for me because I love camping with my family and it brings positive emotions. I just purchased a beautiful Wenonah kevlar canoe and look forward to many years of canoe tripping. My wife and I have plans of exploring the wilderness in our retirement, taking canoe trips into the back courtry. This will only be possible if I can change my ways and get healthy again.

So here is to "Losing the Canoe" and gaining a long and enjoyable healthy life! Wish me luck.
