I am a 50 year old mother of three children who recently became a grandmother. At the present time, I have three beautiful grandsons: James, born in June of 2007, Christian in April 2008, and Xavier, born this past September 15, 2009. They are all such lovely boys!

At the age of 43 - after my children became adults - I decided to earn my undergraduate degree at the nearby University of Michigan. While it has been both a huge and rewarding accomplishment, the constant sitting, studying, and stress sure has taken a toll on my overall health. Unfortunately, I did not make my health a top priority, and now, I am suffering the consequences.

Just as I did twelve years ago after I quit smoking, I went ahead and gave myself permission to eat like a twenty-year-old so I could "dull down" all the emotions from the constant stress and the physical pain of coping with such a difficult process. There are reasons that mature people have a difficult time attending college on a full time basis. And, staying up all night to catch up on homework is just one of them!

It seems that during the past three decades I have participated in a cycle of up and down, gain and then lose, quite a few times now, and I am sick of yo-yo dieting! However, now that I have committed myself to eating more healthy, I know that I do not want to return to those old behaviors!

Due to two spinal surgeries and continuing disc degeneration, I have finally reached the place where I fully accept that I will always have to practice a weight management program to maintain a healthy weight. Therefore, my program will include modified strengthening exercises and low-impact walking. Needless to say, I know that any efforts - never mind how small - can still lead to a healthier and happier me!

In closing, I have to mention that the "Spark People" website is a great tool to assist me in this endeavor. The SP forums are motivational and the members here are very supportive ! To view my goals and current progress, they are located in the profile section below.

My Goals:
Regain control of my dangerous eating habits that in truth, I know will ultimately lead to: a sluggish energy level; shame, due to an unhealthy physical appearance; and worse of all, a horrible perception and outlook due to depression.

After many years of following celebrity trends, fad diets, and hyped-up health information, I no longer want to exist in this continually negative manifestation of bad health . I want to live the best that I can! It's the law of physics - my daily good choices will bring about healthier results. While my ultimate goal is to learn to live within a healthy Body Mass Index, I will achieve my "scale goal' by losing it in 10% mini-goal losses.

In addition to focusing my conscious energy on planning out my meals -aka mindful eating - I will also use the Spark People program as a tool to help me stay on track and remain well-balanced. I want to limit processed foods and sugar, and walk whenever possible.
