As far as the Diabetes; Here are some tips I hope will help you get your's under control a bit better. My Endocrinologist told me - "believe it or not you can have the icing, just DON'T eat the cake! That's where the white empty carbs are." Also, try to stop eating any white refined flours, rice, grains. Eat the brown rices and also believe it or not, Lima beans are awesome for balancing blood sugar. Oh and also start eating more of the lentils and black beans, they are great for fiber and help with the blood sugars as well. Hummus is great and just adding chick peas (garbanzo beans) straight out of the can to soups and stews, they are loaded with protein, that's how vegetarians get their protein. You can also rinse the chickpeas and throw some into a salad for protein. These tips will help you feel fuller longer. Drink lots of water. I'm a tea person so I make a pitcher and drink weakened tea, just enough for taste through the day. I hate water. Has to have some taste. You'll be amazed if you switch to these easy changes, how much better you'll feel and your meat bill will go down! LOL

Oh and btw, try to stop eating ketchup. It is LOADED with sugars! I haven't eaten ketchup in twenty years. I personally am a honey mustard freak so that pretty much goes on everything I eat. LOL

Start eating whole grains, 100% whole grains, if you want a piece of bread or roll at a steak dinner, don't eat a baked potato. Too many carbs. Substitute a veggie instead. Add a salad at dinner. There are a lot of desserts now that Diabetics can eat. Also, if you like dark chocolate, that's the one to treat yourself. The phenols in the dark chocolate somehow, don't ask me, they do something to balance the blood sugar. For example, I can eat 3 pieces of dark chocolate right around 11 pm and my glucose will be under 100 when I test in the morning! MILK chocolate is the worst! Try to limit bananas. Eat lots of protein because that will balance your blood sugar better. If you want a quick snack, a simple spoonful of peanut butter and an apple works wonders for quick energy. Oh, be sure to use real butter, it helps the body absorb vitamins and minerals better. Oh and any food to help boost your HDL, ie: GOOD CHOLESTEROL also helps because that will help the cardiovascular part of diabetes affecting your blood vessels and your risk for heart disease!

Be sure to eat a good balanced breakfast. That protein, mainly eggs or (I use turkey bacon) are good sources of protein and will keep you balanced until around 11 am when you can grab an apple or cup of pineapple or peach, whatever or cheese cubes. Also if you're near a Kroger, their house brand Carb yogurt about $.49 each cup is what my Endocrinologist recommends and it helps level the carbs. If you are a bacon, sausage, ham, meat eater, limit your portions and add a veggie which will help balance everything out. Sadly, the Drs. at the VA are not going to tell you these secrets so I thought I'd pass them along. Use Splenda for baking. You cannot tell the difference. Exercise! At least 15 minutes walking a day will do wonders. Good luck! God bless and Thank you again! emoticon Barbara Plunkett Turner, Chesterfield, VA
