Since the first day of elementary school I was always the "big boned" and "husky" guy! I had pretty much decided it was just the way I was since I was in my mid 30s and still that way and getting bigger...

Not so many years ago I was over 285 pounds and had been up to 300 at one time and was pretty much eating crappy food and drinking sweet tea and sodas and then I started feeling bad... Weird bad. Like cold sweats at night and generally crappy.

Several days after this I got my dad to test my blood sugar with his meter and it was over 300... WOW. Not good... Also I had noticed my blood pressure and resting heart rate had started creeping up over time with my weight!

During my cold sweats and general crappy feeling time I didn't have a meter to check my sugar, but I would guess it was well into the critical range of over 600. I am probably lucky I didn't die!

My dad was fairly recently diagnosed with diabetes and my grandmother has it and I didn't want it, so I started doing some research and decided I would make a drastic change and see if that would work!

So, I started eating better and slowly started exercising.

For food to lose weight and help curb the blood sugar I started eating a fairly low carb diet of green beans, walnuts and tuna and other things pretty healthy and used Diet Power to track what I ate (didn't know about SparkPeople back then!). I also made sure I drank plenty of water and have pretty much always took good supplements and vitamins even back when I ate crappy food. BTW: I am a real picky eater and don't like many foods...

My routine consisted of doing free weights to keep my upper body in shape (started with 10 lbs per hand and have worked up to 30 lbs presently) and doing treadmill to keep my lower body in shape and to burn the calories. During my max loosing time when I was keeping track I lost 41 pounds in just under 16 weeks.

I have recently replaced most of my free weight workouts with a sledgehammer routine using a 12 pound sledge. I've also added a "Perfect Pushup" workout, some pull ups and reverse crunch type hanging-L ab busters from my pull-up bar and a great full body type strength exercise called a "one armed dumbbell snatch" using a 30 pound dumbbell.

On the treadmill I go for high incline and low speed. Presently I do 3.5 MPH at 10% incline for 30+ minutes. Burns over 370 calories in 30 minutes and gives me some solid legs! When I can I go outdoors and use my "training hill" which is a .12 mile hill leading up to my house with a 15-20% incline that I walk while carrying my 12 pound sledge and doing some of my sledge exercises while walking.

Well that is the basic about me story. The details are a bit more interesting, but that is the general overview!

Oh yeah, my sugar level is now in the 80-125 range and seem very stable. Also my vitals are doing great with my blood pressure at 108/63 and a heart rate of 56!

Of course my new diet isn't for everyone. I eat the same things all the time, but for me it's no problem I like boring foods and can eat the same things without a problem! You can checkout my Food & Exercise Log near the top right of my page to see what I'm doing and eating!

Update 2012:
Pretty much only eat my super fast no cooking meal all the time now that has rolled oats, chia seeds, sliced almonds, hemp seed, stevia & real salt.

I wash this down with my "hot cocoa" which is a heaping spoon of cocoa, heaping spoon of pea protein powder, real salt and stevia in some hot water!

I eat about 2500 calories of this stuff every day. It equals 140+ grams of protein, 90+ grams of fat and 350+ grams or carbs every day! And it's sort of vegan I guess... I also take a good multi-vitamin!

As far as exercises all I do now is Five Tibetan Rites & Tiger Moves exercises daily and about 3 times a week I jog a mile or so up and down the hill to my house.

That's it!

emoticon Just dropping by to say Hi - having met your goal looks so great on your page. I've shared a link to your page with some of the male members of my family who think SparkPeople (and dieting) is for women. You have done an awesome job.

Hola Senior! Thanks for checking out my new "photography". I like to put up new pics when I have them to show progress. I'll be going to California next week, so I'll be sure to put more up when I return. Hope you add some new pics too - I look forward to seeing your next outdoor excursion so I can drool on with envy. Later!
