Many people restrict carbs or eat low protein. For me, to stave off hunger, I eat a protein and a carb for every meal/snack. I am often telling people why I do this in the form of an analogy used by my friend CHRISMACSWIMS - it is the first time I understood 'why' both protein and carbohydrates are important to my body, why denying my body one or the other only causes fatigue and a constant feeling of hunger.

I figured since I reference this analogy so much to other people here on spark, it would be good to put it here, on my site. So now, when I want to reference it, I'll just send the person here to read it for themselves. Without further ado:

THE CAMPFIRE ANALOGY
Carbohydrates are the same as kindling while protein is like a log.

When you go to start a fire, if you use only kindling, you will need to continuously feed the fire or it will go out. Kindling burns fast but it doesn't linger. Neither does the energy produced from carbohydrates.

Now, if you try to build a campfire with only logs, you will not have much success in getting it started. In the end, after a lot of time feeding the fire wood, it may or may not start. But if you are lucky enough to get the fire started, because its a log, it'll burn for a long while. The same goes for protein. If you can get the protein into your body, it will take a while to 'kick in' but when it does, you will feel better.

This is why its best to start a campfire with kindling and feed it logs while the kindling is still burning. The kindling will burn long enough to get the logs going - and once the logs are going, then the fire will burn for a long time.

If you feed your body a carbohydrate and a protein, the carbohydrate will offer a quick fix to the hunger and a burst of energy - by the time the energy from the carbohydrate is gone, the protein has started to burn and will carry you through to the next meal/snack.

There is no need to ever feel hungry. Hunger will only make a person want to eat more to satisfy and squelch that feeling. If you do not go hungry, then you are less likely to binge or make a bad decision.

I do not believe in fad diets or diets that tell you what to eat and when to eat. I believe if you follow someone else's regimine, then you are not learning how to take care of yourself and be healthy.

By taking control of my own eating habits, I am learning to control what I am eating and more importantly, WHY I am eating. I am more educated about food and am allowing myself to make educated decisions.

This is more than a diet. It truly is a lifestyle change for me.... and my family.

    Actually, the letterboxing we did gave very exact locations, so much so that we only had to look within a 2 foot area (at the most) by the time we finished following the clues, and all were within a foot or two of established hiking trails or even gravel roads. Geocaching, while probably a great hobby, does require the purchase of somewhat expensive GPS equipment, which puts the hobby outside of our budget constraints at this time. As for being devastating to local flora and fauna, well I strongly feel that has more to do with the person and less with the letterboxing/geocaching/hiking/whatever the person is doing. In fact, the place we got the letterboxing clues strongly admonished to stay on trails and not cause damage.
