I have been Sparking since 2007. I decided to change my username from CGEMMELL to CarolGem1950 to highlight my first name, my belief about myself (also part of my last name), and my year of birth. I'll shortly be 65 and I'm proud to be healthy. My weight loss journey has been a long one but I'm not giving up. The older you get, the harder it is. My overeating is in most cases emotional. I walk the dog twice a day and practice tai chi regularly. I've suffered from situational anxiety since my teens, and have worked very hard to overcome the inability to do certain things like traveling. I have stuck with Spark People because of the amazing interaction with people and the many activities and resources available for tracking and learning. Wish I knew the perfect way to achieve and maintain my ideal weight - but then I wouldn't be here, would I!

My Goals:
1. To make healthy eating a lifestyle change.
2. To make daily exercise a priority.
3. To strive for balance between body and mind.
4. To help others.
5. To exhibit gratitude.

My Program:
I will not lose weight quickly like I did in my 30s so I need to continue to motivate myself. Some positive things I do include always eating breakfast, reading labels for calorie and fat content, using whole foods as opposed to prepared or packaged ones in my meals, and staying hydrated. A fun reward for me is a glass of wine in the evening. I am mindful of my carb cravings and my emotional eating in the evenings.

Personal Information:
I am from Harrisburg, PA. My husband and I are both retired teachers - lucky to be healthy. I have two married children and three beautiful granddaughters.

Other Information:
Since retiring, I have time to do many things and feel less stress. I like to play with the grandchildren, read, and do tai chi. I have more trouble doing vigorous exercise. I feel like I should have lost weight since I'm including more exercise in my day but I haven't broken the habit of eating too much. My worst habit is giving in to eating snacks after dinner.
