    Hey Girl! I am subscribed to the SP Living with IBS, and this is pt IV of IBS:

    Do's & Don'ts for Managing IBS

    Because food, eating, and cooking habits can be very complex, SparkPeople strongly suggests that you see a qualified dietitian for both nutrition and diet therapy. Making different food choices and changing eating habits can help with symptom relief, but it's important to determine what works for each individual.

    IBS Managing Do's

    * DO consume meals and snacks on a regular, consistent schedule. Try 5-6 smaller meals daily.
    * DO chew thoroughly and eat at a leisurely pace. If you must eat in a hurry, serve yourself half portions.
    * DO drink eight cups of water daily.
    * DO find a "team approach" to treatment. Work with a physician, dietitian and psychologist.
    * DO exercise moderately for 30-60 minutes each day.
    * DO relieve stress. Introduce a daily practice of yoga, meditation, or Tai Chi.
    * DO keep a diary. Record when symptoms occur, what you ate around the time of the occurrence, as well as activities and emotional feelings. This diary will help identify patterns you can avoid.

    IBS Managing Don'ts

    * DON'T skip meals. The stomach is more sensitive when it is empty.
    * DON'T swallow excess air. This may trigger symptoms. Instead of gulping beverages, drinking through a straw and talking while chewing, sip your drinks and eat with your mouth closed.
    * DON'T skimp on sleep. Sleep loss decreases your ability to handle stress and can make you more susceptible to attacks.
    * DON'T smoke.
