I'm Tara, a 32-year-old at-home mom of two. I have a 3-year-old son and a baby girl. I joined SparkPeople with 72 pounds to lose (14 left now!!), but I know I can do it!! I really want to get healthy and fit ("skinny" is NOT the goal -- healthy IS!) so that I can be a fun mom for my kids, and so that I can live a long, healthy life with them.

MY STORY:
In Spring and early Summer of 2004, I lost 30 pounds, going from 232 (my highest ever -- and I'm only 5'4" -- photo in my gallery) to 202. And then I got pregnant, so I had to put weight loss on hold. Over the next three years, I gave birth to two children and nursed them both, gaining only 5 pounds back in the process. So when my second child was just over 3 months old, in Sept. 07, I joined SP at 207 pounds.

I started out slowly, as I wanted to make this a permanent lifestyle change and not a "diet." I aimed for 1 to 2 pounds a week and told myself this journey would take a year. In the beginning, I stayed around 1500 calories a day, and if I walked regularly (pushing the stroller helped!), I saw good results. Over the last seven months, I have lost 58 pounds (83 from my high!), and I feel GREAT! I am down to about 1200-1350 calories a day (averaging around 1250), and I still take my kids for walks regularly. But now I have an elliptical trainer in the house, and I get on that at least 3 times a week.

My goal weight is 135 pounds, and I know I can reach it now! I haven't felt this good in years, and I know that with dedication and focus, I can continue this new, healthy lifestyle because I am NOT on a diet!! :)

WHAT ELSE?
My son has autism, so I am always interested in comparing notes with other parents of special-needs kids.

QUOTES TO CHEW ON
Well... better to chew on words than food! So I am going to start putting motivational quotes in this little spot. First up is a quote I saw on a post from "NONSMOKER2":

Courage doesn't always roar. Sometimes courage is the little voice at the end of the day that says, "I'll try again tomorrow." ~Mary Anne Radmacher

New quote, 4.5.08: "Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out." ~Robert Collier

My Goals:
In high school I was a lifeguard. While I don't think I'll ever quite have that figure again after two kids (not w/out serious plastic surgery! LOL!), I would like to be comfortable and confident in a bathing suit again.

My Program:
I am on a 1200-1300 daily calorie count. I'm trying to make everything I eat be something worthwhile, because I want to keep the calories down! I work out 3-4 times a week on my elliptical and take my kids for walks around the neighborhood :) I also drink lots of water, and I remind myself that I am NOT on a diet! Lifestyle change is permanent, and serious weight loss takes time. I'm in no rush. Slow and steady wins the race.
