5 years ago, I followed the advice of psychologist Judith Beck in her book The Beck Diet Solution to change the way I THINK about eating and to change my eating habits. That approach was really effective.

Now, in June of 2017, I return to this diet since I've become unmindful, gained back pounds and it's time to restart. I expect that restarting is something I'll need to do again and again until the day I leave this earth. It will never be easy to battle my lizard brain's desire to eat anything available. A million years ago, my ancestors were the ones who DID eat everything available and thus they survived. (Over)eating was a strategy that meant they survived, their genes survived, and thus I exist.

But a strategy that was an excellent a million years ago is no longer a good one today. So, in 2017, I realize I've got to use my brain, my prefrontal cortex to argue with that insistent lizard brain who wants nothing but sweets.

Step one in this cognitive approach is to write out the "advantages" of sticking to my eating plan. Then it is a daily task to reread those reasons. Some of the most important reasons on my list are: 1. It is a promise I make to myself, and I highly value the act of honoring a promise to myself. 2. This is my "spiritual practice", and there is great value (and motivation) in promising to practice. 3. The serenity prayer says to accept the things you cannot change and change the things you can. As I age, the number of things in the "cannot change" group grows and grows. That can be awful depressing. To overcome despair, it helps to put energy into the few things I DO have control over, like my decisions about what I eat.
