I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes the beginning of July 2010. In August I took a diabetic education class and began my healthy lifestyle. In October a friend introduced me to SparkPeople. I have been hooked ever since. Since July I have lost 40 lbs!! I took it the slow and healthy way. I walk/run my dog at a very brisk pace every night alternating the distance and route to accomodate my strength training. I have now reversed my diabetes and can go off my meds! My doctor is amazed and very pleased with my new lifestyle changes. I love the way I feel and look. Life is GREAT!!! Thanks SparkPeople =)

Fitness Minutes: 15,982

My Goals:
I want to lose weight in order to be healthy. I want to keep my blood glucose levels in the healthy range for someone with diabetes. And I will continue to exercise 5-6 times a week for life : ) I want to live a long, healthy life so I can enjoy my grandchildren some day when my sons ever decide to give me some :)

My Program:
I walk 3-4 times a week and do strength training 2-3 times a week. During the winter I substitute fitness videos for the walking so I can still keep my heart in shape. I walk/run with my daycare kids in our school gym too. I keep track of my fitness and nutrition on SparkPeople. I eat healthy foods 90% of the time and indulge myself one or two times a week but always in moderation.

Personal Information:
I am a Christian. I live in a small city in Michigan and work in a child care facility. I love my job. My husband is a pastor of a fairly large Lutheran church. My dog is now my kid as my sons both live out-of-state. They have brought 2 lovely women into our family and I look forward to the day when they all give me grandchildren :) I love my life!!

Hello again! Just checking in to see if you were able to break through your plateau? If you did, what worked for you? Have a great day! emoticon

Ann - I saw your status today about hitting the plateau and was wondering what kind of fitness tools you are using in addition to SparkPeople's food and exercise trackers? I personally use the Polar Loop which tracks my various activities and counts up how many calories I've burned throughout the whole day. It also counts my steps and when I sync it up with my heart rate monitor, it gives me accurate calories burns and heart rate information for my exercise sessions (plus more info that I don't quite understand!!). You can wear it all day, including in the shower or swimming, etc, and even when you sleep. It even tracks how long you sleep at night!! I've realized that I don't get enough sleep at night - especially on nights where my 8-yr-old son (type 1 diabetic) has an insulin pump change or high/low blood sugars.

No, I do not work for Polar (I swear!!) but I really love this device and it has given me so much information that I can use to change things up when I need to. I have worn it pretty much non-stop since I purchased it in October (2013). Perhaps this would help you get past that plateau you've hit and it could help you see some more accurate tracking information when it comes to how many calories you're burning throughout the day and in your exercise sessions.

In case you're interested, you can get more info at Polar's website

    Good luck!! emoticon

Ann, you are an encouragement to all of us who have a family history of diabetes. Exercise and healthy diets are much better options than all the meds my mom took! Keep up the good work!!

Hi Ann! I'm so glad to read your story. Congratulations, I know it was a lot of hard work. I, too, have benefited from Spark People's wonderful motivation and goal setting aspects. I was diagnosed with diabetes and, though medication was never prescribed, I was able to get my blood glucose readings back in the normal range with a careful control of my carbs. Spark People help there and also with my disabling chronic depression. Though I've been on meds for many years, Spark People's exercise program made all the difference and now I am normally happy and just don't have any depression to speak of.

Love seeing your success story. I'm listening to Dr. Bernstein's lectures on Youtube and want to read his book on the Diabetes Diet. He's very interesting since he has had Type 1 diabetes since he was 12 and he's now 78. I don't have Type 2 Diabetes but I do have Metabolic Syndrome/Insulin resistance and I want to learn all I can to help myself.
