Hello, My name is Mark. I am disabled and am trying to lose some weight so that I might be healthier. I do most of the cooking in our house and try to make healthy choices as to what to eat. I am some what inactive do to my disabilities. My Doctor told me I need to start walking and lose some weight. At first I could only walk to the corner and back but I slowly worked it up to two miles a day. I try to walk every day. And my dogs each enjoy their turn at going for a walk. In fact they look forward to it and stand at the door waiting for me to put my boots on.

I am now over halfway to my goal. It has not been easy. For the last fiive months I was on a plateau that finally broke this month. Even though I was not losing weight I was losing width. I went from a size 44 pants to a size 40 just since November. Why the size reduction but not the weight lose? In November I started Physical therapy. At first it was very diffecult to even do five minute on the stationary bike and could only lift one pound weights. After three months of therapy my therapist suggested I join the gym program at the physical therapy gym. I did so and have been exercising three times a week since then. My exercise routine went from 30 minutes to now taking 2 1/2 hours. This is because more and more exercises were add and more time on each peice of equipment. The reason why I was losing width and not weight is because I was developing muscles and losing fat. They increase in one equaled the lose in the other. The best benefit of the exercises is that it has reduced the amount of pain that I am in form my severe arthritis.

My Goals:
My goal is to lose about 80 pounds and get back to the 175 lbs. I was at before I got sick. Or maybe even more then that.

My Program:
I was walking every day but since October 2008 when My Doctor sent me to Physical Therapy, because my arthritis pain was really bad, I was started in a gym program to help increase my flexibility. Now I go to the Gym for 2 hours a day. Monday, Wednesday and Friday i concentrate on strength exercises and do 20 minutes of stretching and then I finish it off with what ever cardio exercise i can do in the remaining time. On Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays I do cardio exercises and some stretching.

    Just want you to know that my husband passed on Feb 11,2013 from cancer and he is now in the arms of Jesus. I do miss him so but the way things are going in this world it will be soon that I will be with the Lord Jesus and my husband. I am just glad that the Lord reached him before he passed.

    Mark keep up the good work, don't get discouraged. I too am a slow looser by the scales but my clothes keep getting smaller. One of the reason this happens is that muscle weighs more than fat so when you start exercising you start gaining muscle, but sometimes it takes a while to create equilibrium and have it show up on the scale. I am proud of you and keep exercising.

    There is such a disease as AS... my goodness you have been misinformed, but it is spelled differently than you have it usually goes with RA and / or Osteo Arthritis.
