    In answer to your question, they figure calories by looking at your goals and exercise level and then calculating your base metabolic rate by weight/age/gender (how many calories you're burning every day without exercising).

    Edit: Oh wait, the fitness tracker! I think they assume that you're going to be doing a brisk walk for the number of minutes you put as your goal, if you don't enter a calories burned goal.
