My name's Eileen and I live in So Cal. I'm almost 42 years old and until just recently I have been an avid "Exercise Avoider". Why take the stairs when there is a perfectly good elevator right next to them? Walking to the mailbox was akin to a 5k - and if I bent down to pick up the newspaper, AND bring in the trash cans, well, that's what I call a Triathlon! Since I didn't exercise much (pushing the footrest down on the recliner SHOULD count as some kind of leg exercise, right?)

- I also had incredible eating habits to go along with my "grueling" routine. A typical day would go something like this - Breakfast: 1 Redbull (I needed the energy to stay conscious at my desk job) and a package of chocolate covered Hostess donuts (sometimes Ding Dongs or Cupcakes - I like to mix things up!) Snack Time: working in an office there was usually a bounty of goodies - more donuts, bagels, cookies, and the inevitable candy dish! Lunch: Some sort of artery clogging, grease covered "Heart Attack in a Bag" fast food Afternoon Snack: whatever leftovers there were from the morning snack Dinner: Same things as lunch Evening Snack: Ice cream, cookies, cake - maybe all three!

My philosophy on nutrition was "There's only 2 food groups: Cheese & Chocolate. And if I want meat - there's always Beef Jerky!"

Needless to say, Sports Illustrated wasn't calling me to be their next Swimsuit Model and Victoria's Secret wasn't knocking on my door either.

I was tired all the time, no energy to do anything, and just flat out disgusted with myself. So I said to myself it was time to make some very drastic changes...actually, my Dr. politely hinted that I should do did my mother...

So I made my first healthy change on 8/8/09 - I quit smoking after 27 years! It's been tough, and I've cracked a few times, but it's progress...I quickly realized that I had better DO something, since I wasn't smoking, and I joined a gym AND got a personal trainer on 9/18/09!

He told me that walking from my bed to the couch to the kitchen and back is not "circuit training" (who knew?!) and that if I wanted to see results I was going to have to work out consistently 4-5 times a week...he meant EVERY week...I was kinda hoping 4-5 times the first week...and be done with it. Not so. Apparantly, chitchatting with the girls at the front desk doesn't count as "going to the gym" either.

He said I would have to change my eating habits drastically also. More fruits and vegetables (carrot cake doesn't count, nor does raspberry filled danishes); lean protein instead of high fat meats; cut waaaaay back on the sugar intake (I actually think I have high-fructose corn syrup running through my veins instead of blood.); multigrains, high fiber - blah, blah, blah. Ok, I was willing to give it a try...

So here it is 2 months later - and here's what's changed. I go to the gym at least 4 days a week. I strength train for 30 minutes and do some kind of cardio (I like the StairMonster!) for about 45 minutes. My eating has changed's not the best, but it is soooo much better than before. I feel better, sleep better, my skin looks better - but let's face it - what really matters is: HOW MUCH WEIGHT HAVE I LOST???

The moment of truth, November 21, 2009...I have GAINED 8 lbs!!! WHAT???!!!! Are you kidding me?! GAINED??
After all the struggles within myself - dragging myself off the couch and to the gym, when I soooo desperately just wanted to go to bed; the time consuming menu reading BEFORE I go out to eat to make sure I order the healthiest thing; the FACT that I hardly ever GO OUT TO EAT anymore anyway; no fast food burgers in 2 months (ok, I think I had 2); so many, many changes - AND I GAINED 8 lbs! Unbelievable...

So the easy thing to say is...give up, I weighed less when I was doing nothing and eating like a shark (or a goat - y'know, an animal that eats anything).

But I REFUSE to give up! I WILL NOT BE DEFEATED! I know that I haven't done this thing perfectly (not even close!) and maybe I haven't been entirely consistent (I like to think of myself as consistently inconsistent), but I am making some changes. I am eating fresh fruits and vegetables (I used to just pass this aisle on the way to the prepackaged, highly processed garbage that I considered food). I AM more mindful of what I'm eating, and try to make better choices; I do grudgingly go to the gym and as much as I struggle to actually "get" there, I always feel much better when I've gone.

So today I've joined SparkPeople - cuz what I have been lacking is motivation, encouragement, community, being with other's who are on the same journey as I am. I am hoping this is a turning point for me - and that I WILL create the "new" me that is worthy of the cover of Victoria's Secret (or at least be able to wear some cute undies without my stomach hanging over them!)
