Introduction Text I was 59 years old and needed to lose 138 pounds to get within the "normal" weight category for my height. My BMI was 44. I knew I was overweight, heck, I knew I was fat, but it still came as a shock to be classified as morbidly obese. I was introduced to SP by my dietician who thought I could use the tools to journal my eating. I was seeing the dietician because I was interested in lapband surgery. Diets have not been my friend. Every time I lose more than 50 lbs. I end up gaining 70 when I am done. So, I was working with the dietician to try to change my bad habits before having surgery. I finally had a date set, and the day I met with the dietician and nurse to start my pre-surgery diet and to get my surgery info, the surgeon asked to see me. He had gotten the results of my motility/manometry test and it showed I had "significant degradation of the motility of my esophagus." He didn't waste any time and told me up front he would not do lap band surgery. I could find another surgeon who might do it, do nothing or he would be happy to do gastric by-pass. He said he felt I would be a good candidate for the surgery, that it might actually help my gerd and asthma but it was up to me. I had not wanted to have by pass because of the malabsorption, the stomach cutting and the dumping. Ultimately I decided to go forward with the gastric by-pass. It was the study that said of morbidly obese people, only 1-2% are successful losing 50% of their excess body weight and keeping it off for 5 years. I was pretty sure I was not going to be in that 1-2% so I decided to grab what chance I had for a healthier better me. Sept. 23, 2009 was the day of my surgery. I know it is not the ultimate answer. I know that unless I change my eating habits, I can destroy the progress I have made thus far, but I also know that this surgery has given me a chance I did not have before. I am hoping SP will help keep me motivated and strong enough to make the changes I need to reach my long term goals and my short term goals.

I live in Superior, Wisconsin and enjoy living here. (Most of the time. Winters can try my patience.) I love being so close to Lake Superior, being able to get away from "civilization" at the drop of a hat, sitting by the lake in summer, being so close to great camping, going skiing in winter and kayaking in the summer. It was a good place to raise my children and is a good place to live.
