I used to avoid ice breakers, but let's do a bit of an intro anyways and we'll go from there. I'm Michael Peterson, however for a long time, I used a nickname of "Norm". No I didn't drink tons of beer or sit on a bar stool all day, however my overall personality was a close match to the Cheers character. I looked ultra serious at times, perhaps intimidating, but underneath I like to think I was/am a teddy bear with a dry and "literal" sense of humor.

I started this year with a goal of getting some things in order. I didn't think at that time weight was one of them. Even two weeks later when I got a call from the Y and a free tour with a two-week membership, I still was thinking that I was going to have to wait. I'm not sure the tour guide was expecting that comment as he had a very confused look on his face when he read what I had filled out. (Do you want to get healthy? "Yes, but I don't have the time and I don't want to commit to this if I'm not serious about it.") Here comes the "but". But my wife talked me into signing up. I did have a goal that I had wanted to accomplish which was to keep up with my kids. (Update: As of August 14th, I've raced a 5K with all 3 kids and they've all beat me, so I'm not there yet.).

A month in, after consistently getting to the Y 3 days a week for 30 minutes, I stepped on the scale and found out that I had gained 2 pounds from when I started.

That was the "straw that broke the camel's back", "the moment the light bulb came on", "the day the switch was flipped", or however you want to phrase it.

On that Saturday afternoon (February 13, 2010), I committed to changing my eating patterns and to step up my work-out plan, and get serious. So I set a goal to lose weight and have been busy making that work since.

Along the way, other ideas have come up. HEY! Maybe I should try a 5K! It struck me almost like an item on the bucket list (Been there, done that, got the t-shirt), however the bonus here was this item would actually COME with a t-shirt. How great is that for a literalist? Anyways, I've since run my first, second and third 5Ks (ever) and as mentioned lost to all of my kids, including the 3 year-old in a stroller.

If I decide to stop at 100 pounds (which I may), I'm just about 4/5ths of the way there and it's been a fun journey. Lots of new things I never would have tried. Lots of great stories, a couple of great t-shirts, and only a couple of steps to go until I catch the kids, except I think they are accelerating!

You're right, she probably did hear me. She's never really been on bored with me getting into shape. I think she wanted me to lose a few pounds, but then I really got into it. Now I'm very active. I don't push it on her at all because that's not my way, but I think she misses the old fat guy who would bring home Taco Bell or pizza a couple times a week. She has been SLOWLY getting on bored with this though. It used to cause fights, now she asks me which race I'm running next. I'll take the progress.
