I used to love to dance. I mean really dance -- get out on the dance floor and hop, shake, sway, wiggle and drip in sweat, no matter who was watching. Then I got married, pregnant and gained about 60 pounds -- and kept it after my daughter was born. I gave up the dance floor for motherhood, a desk job with long hours and some really wretched eating habits.
Twenty-three years later, I'm almost as out of shape as I can get (certainly as I've ever been), and my weight has climbed to 340 pounds. My ankles and knees hurt every time I walk -- and I'm wheezing after a quick dodge into the mall, or one flight of stairs.
I've been flailing around the last couple of years trying this and that, but nothing seems to take.
When my new husband suggested we learn ballroom dancing, I thought that would be great! But when we got down to it, I found I just wasn't in good enough shape, not even in the low-key class I waswe were taking. It was pretty clear I needed some intervention.
A couple of weeks ago I started doing my own version of water aerobics, something I can do without pressure on my knees and ankles. Today I found SparkPeople and it looks perfect for me with its menus, motivational tools and trackers -- as well as the opportunity for community support. I think I need that support and it's something I've never really taken advantage of before.
I hope to move along toward my weight loss goal -- 180 pounds is a long haul -- along with the rest of you.

I hope to lose 180 pounds using a combination of calorie controled diet and exercise, including water aerobits to start and weight lifting.
