I did it! I finished my first half marathon! It was so much fun. Who would have ever thought when I started on this journey that I would be saying that.

My journey to get in shape started several years ago when I found a great beginning running program for women called Running For - It was just what I needed and I love it!

Using RunningForWomen, I have gone from being a total non-runner to completing several 5K's, and 10K's and now my latest accomplishment - a Half Marathon using the run/walk method.

RunningForWomen starts you out slowly (walk 5 minutes/run 1 minute for 5 repetitions) and builds up your running time and distance gradually. The first phase of the program builds you up to 30 minutes of running (not including walk breaks) in order to run a 5K and subsequent phases build your mileage to a 10K distance and beyond. Karey Zufelt, a physician and the founder and running coach of RFW, is very helpful, knowledgeable and active in encouraging her members along the way.

Some of the reasons I have quit or been discouraged with a running program in the past are that they start me out running too far, too fast, too soon or I am not eating the food that my body needs to have the proper fuel to run. RFW addresses these very issues and has helped me to become a runner!

SparkPeople is a great place to find the encouragement and motivation I need as I continue on my journey. I enjoy reading about what others are doing to stay healthy and get in shape and I love meeting new SparkBuddies!

Better to be a slower runner than a former runner.

"Last is just the slowest winner." -- C. Hunter Boyd

"For every runner who tours the world running marathons, there are thousands who run to hear the leaves and listen to the rain, and look to the day when it is suddenly as easy as a bird in flight. For them, sport is not a test but a therapy, not a trial but a reward, not a question but an answer." George Sheehan, MD

“There are no health benefits for running faster. It’s only for the ego.” -- Jeff Galloway

"Speed is mostly for the ego...but there's nothing wrong with a weekly ego boost" -- Jeff Galloway

"A horse doesn't care how much you know until it knows how much you care." (A line from Seabiscuit) The same is true for two-legged runners.
