When I first moved to Chicago about 15 years ago, I weighed over 300 pounds. In my suburban life, I was COMPLETELY sedentary...never walked anywhere, drove the car to visit friends who lived three blocks away! Living in a big city changed my life. I had to walk ... and found that I enjoyed it! My weight dropped down to the 250's, still heavy but not like I used to be!

On my 41st birthday - January 4, 2011 - I saw a doctor who told me that the Type 2 Diabetes that I'd never really done anything about was having a severely negative effect on my body and that I needed to change my lifestyle to avoid serious health issues. My A1C (a lab test that tells you what your average blood glucose levels are over an approximately three month period) was more than three times what is healthy, feeling in almost all of my toes is gone (something that apparently cannot be reversed), and there was some indication that it was starting to affect my kidney function. My weight that day was 242 lbs.

I was adequately freaked out. I've done soooo many of the "diet" plans in the past, including SparkPeople, with some limited success. This time, I am determined to NOT commit to a diet, but a permanent change to the way I live my life.

3/9/11 - Today I stepped on the scale and weighed 217.8. My scale and my doctor's scale differ by a bit, but I will now be using this scale as my tracker. Either way, I am down more than 20 lbs in a little over two months. In all fairness, some of this is thanks to drugs I'm taking for the diabetes, but I've made drastic changes and improvements too. My carb intake has radically changed. Sugar just isn't a part of my diet anymore and my goal has been less than 50 grams of carbs per meal (my doctor has said that the goal should be 45-60).

My short-term goal - weigh less than 200 lbs by June 25th. In just over 100 days, I WILL weigh less than what I did at my high school graduation 23 years ago when I attend this year's Gay Pride Parade!!!
