As we celebrate Mom's today, remember those in nursing homes who are alone... and have no one to give them their time.

There is nothing worse than living day after day and have no family or friends pay you a visit or give you a call to just say I am thinking of you. I witnessed this with my own mother as none of the the family bothered with her week after week. For one sibling it was especially difficult because mom has dementia and even though she knows who we are, you just can't carry on a conversation with her because within minutes she makes absolutely no sense. You just have to roll with it! To try and correct her only adds to the frustration they already experience because, don't let this lapse of memory fool you... THEY KNOW!!! Because of this, the sibling mentioned above does not visit her unless he absolutely HAS TO!!! Sibling #2 lives out of state and does not even call her any longer, once the money was gone... so was she. Unfortunately, it is something that happens all too frequently with parents in the care of their children. As a result... mom just broke in my arms about a month ago and sobbed, telling me how lonely she is. THIS just broke my heart!
Since then I am with her four days a week... I have lunch with her now every M W F... for an hour. Saturday's I do my running which should be my day of worship because I observe the Sabbatth on Saturday as it is written biblically. Sunday is my day with Mom. I bring her a treat from Panera Bread along with a Mocha Cappucchino. The weather is getting warm and she is now asking for ice cream. LOL! So her treat today will be a dish of Frozen Pudding ice cream. Her other favorite ice cream treats are Coffee Frappes and Orange Sherbert Coolers from Friendly's... (they changed the name and I can't remember what they call them now but she loves them).
As time consuming as this is, it just does my heart good to make her happy. If she had her way she would come home and live with me but... that is just not possible.
Mom is now in Acute Renal Failure and I had the job of notifying family members and a few friends. That was not pleasant but it had to be done. So now we just wait for the inevitable... Mom has a DNH & DNR...

To be a care giver is very VERY difficult and the one thing each of us needs to keep in mind is that we NEED to take care of our health... it is REALLY NOT an option. Even as a certified Health Coach... I gave up EVERYTHING to care for mom and it nearly did me in. I am on the mend and G_d is so faithful and giving me the strength, wisdom and key nuggets to aid in getting my health back... like walking for 10 minutes every hour on the hour. Once I started this it quickly grew into more. For that I am so grateful for the nugget of wisdom from a doctor on television, it was a G_d wink, of that I am positive!

It is my prayer that this blog entry motivates just one person to give of themselves to others who have no one to hold their hand because they are lonely and scared. No one to bring them a treat to enjoy, or flowers to brighten their day.

I just want to close this by saying...

Attitude is an inside job!... !

I read your information on the "vote for your favorite restaurant" and I too have to watch the sodium. Red Lobster is by far the worst, everything is cooked in butter. I read what you wrote about miso soup at Panera and I have no idea what that is. Can you let me know. bevieg41
