My mother has been obese for as long as I can remember. When I was younger, she wouldn't do as many outdoor active things with me and my brother, either because she couldn't, or she was too embarrassed. When we would beg to go to the beach, she would eventually give in, but cover herself in either oversized clothing or beach towels. Being overweight was an emotional toll on her. Now that she's getting older, she is much less able to do outdoor activities because of her weight. A small hill is too much for her. I love my mother dearly, but do not want to follow the same path with lifestyle, weight, and self image problems that she has. I love doing things outdoors, and do not want to limit myself to small mountains or hills because of my weight and lack of fitness ability. I want to feel comfortable in my own skin and not hide, hoping no one will notice that I am there. My mother was also recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, as have many of her family members. This is not a path I want to follow.

Being in good health, having vitality and energy, feeling strong and confident, this is what motivates me daily.

Picking food to nourish my body rather than eating fun foods that for sure taste great while you eat them, but then afterwards make you feel sluggish and want to just sit and do nothing give me the feedback I need to stay motivated to make better choices on a daily basis.

Heart disease runs in my family, my joints hurt, I want to play with my grandkids, I want to look better, I want to be able to buy non plus size clothes, etc. So many reasons but I still can't lose weight, I do not know what is going to make me stick with a plan. Just to prove to myself I have the character to stick with something.

My motivation.... Well, I am motivated by alot of things but mainly my health and happiness. I want to feel good about myself again. I want to play with my kids. I want to live a long healthy life.

Almost all of the reasons below but also I am just tired of feeling uncomfortable in my own skin. At my all-time high and my starting Spark weight, I felt like a stuffed sausage.

My motivations: My youngest daughter is in college. I want her to be proud of her Mom..but my major motivation was to be more healthy, so I started over again in January..I am already feeling better. I have a long way to go, but it seems more and more possible all the time. I wasn't sure I'd ever get to my goal, because I just kept gaining, no matter what I did. In January I changed my Medicare provider, Dr., way of eating, and exercise dedication. emoticon

My motivations: My daughter is 8 months. I don't want her having the same relationships with her body and food that I do. My husband is deployed, and before he left he'd been doing everything but out-right saying he wanted me to lose weight (even though I'm the same weight I was when we got together). I want to feel good about my body, to be able to do things like walk up stairs without issue, and honestly, I'd love to be the sort of mom and wife that other people are like, "Wow, she looks great", ya know? Plus, diabetes, stroke, etc etc run in my family. Laundry list of motivation.

My 40 year class reunion will be next summer. I don't really want to lose weight although I was extremely skinny all my school years. I just want to be able to wear a nice dress without bulging out of it. Right now I'm just trying to eat healthy and then I want to tone up.

To be able to physically do things that God has called me to do and not be held back by being unhealthy and unfit.
To be healthy for my whole life and not have illnesses related to not taking care of my body.
To have healthy pregnancies and teach my future children to be healthy
To overcome turning to food for comfort and instead learn to turn to God and myself to meet my emotional needs
To be proud of myself and see what I can accomplish when I put in the hard work.
To inspire others in my family to become healthy

Welcome to the site! I'm fairly new too -- not even a month yet -- but I'm making steady progress, and I'm sure you will too!

To feel comfortable in my clothes. To be able to fit back into my smaller clothes. To feel good about myself this summer in a swimsuit. To be able to get married and wear my wedding dress with pride instead of wishing I could hide my arms, or wondering if I look fat in it. I want to be able to look at my wedding photos and remember a fabulous day with friends and family, not cringe at my double chin, or chubby cheeks or flabby arms.

Simple but shallow (at least in the short term):

I'm in a wedding this August and wearing a strapless dress for the first time EVER!

I do not want to be the fat bridesmaid! (Especially since one of the others will still be breastfeeding her twins!)

A little bit vanity, a little bit health (wish this was a bigger motivation, but it's so abstract it's hard to keep in mind...), a fair amount so I can go hiking & things with my husband (very important to him), and a good bit so I can better my chances of having a healthy & easy pregnancy (soon I hope!).

Hello everyone. My name is Shelly and I am new to this site. I have had different things that I focused on to motivate me. But the one that has seemed to stick was the fact that I was not able to fit into the shorts and capris that I was able to fit into last summer. They wont even zip! So I kept those garments instead of giving them away. I will fit into those clothes again even if it isnt this summer.

I think of it like this.......Being in shape allows me to work and be active with my family and friends. I am able to participate actively and really enjoy the outdoors.

My motivation is me wanting to feel good and look my best for me, my husband, and my children. I want to be able to keep up with my children and do the things they love to do as a family. I want to be able to have the energy and strength to ski again. If that isn't enough, I bought a bathing suit in the size I am determined to be again and it is hanging on the wall in my basement. I have to see it every day when I work out. I am taking a before picture of myself today and hanging that on the wall as well.

My Motivation is seeing my progress...
It motivates me to make healthy choices & drinking my water.
Even on those difficult painful days when my brain wants to be as slow as my body, I look to the positive, read a SparkPeople email, take a walk (even if it is around the office, up & down the steps) & pump myself up mentally, spiritually and physically!
SparkPeople has been the best motivation for me in all of these areas.

Very simply ME and my health

5/2/12 12:15 P

Turning 50. I've lost and gained weight so many times I've lost count.

This time I have said enough. I am tired of wasting my time thinking about my weight. Counting calories. Worrying about how I look. What others think. Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. What a complete waste of time. It's not living. Now I am turning 50 and all those years were spent on that! I've had enough. I'm taking care of myself. Not dieting. Living my life. Losing the weight is just a bi-product of my decision. It feels good not to give a rip anymore.

Motivation? To walk the stairs without being winded, to bend over and tie my shoes without that pinch, to feel good on the beach in my bathing suit, to have all my pants be my fat pants, to cross a finish line, to feel better, to look better, to prove all those who said I can't do this wrong, to have my pant size be smaller than my shoe size, to be able to run with my granddaughters in Girls on the Run, to get one of those slick cycling suits and join a cycling club, to not stand in the back row in photos . . . . . . . and on, and on, and on . . . . . .

I always feel like if you know why you are doing it, it makes it easier to get started. I have to say my motivation is that I dont want to be overweight, I have family that never worked out and I have watched their health deteriorate so rapidly it is scary. I dont want to get older and not be able to function because I didnt take the time to excersize and take care of the body the lord gave me. Its not a car, I cant trade it in when it breaks down and no longer works.
