I walk, I ride, I run, I do tai chi chuan, I do bagua, etc. these are each part of a fitness plan. I can walk faster than I can run slow. As Deb noted at those points walking actually burns a few more calories than running. Different exercises will have different outcomes. Tai Chi Chuan for instance does not burn a lot of calories, unless you are doing a fast form, and typically a two player form; it does increase flexibility, strength, balance and has other benefits. Running is a great cardio workout, and for me is more of a work out than my biking, which is also a good cardio workout.

The most important thing is to find things that you enjoy and that you will continue to do and develop over time.

Try this ...

Ask your boyfriend what HR is "high enough". Then when you walk, especially if you're pushing it and working up a sweat, stop three times in the walk and take your HR manually (for 15 seconds and multiply by 4 - any longer and it'll start to slow down).

You'll probably find it's "enough".

If you challenge yourself, walking is a fine exercise and can even burn more calories than running! There is a point at which walking the same speed will burn more calories than running that slowly. You do have to be walking VERY fast though!

Both exercises are good for helping you to get fitter and stronger and burn off a few calories to help with your daily deficit. For exercise it doesn't matter WHAT you do, just THAT you do something.

Walking can help lose fat tremendously. For getting fit though, it may not be enough. As PP noted, biking can be one of the most effective ways of improving the cardiovascular fitness, but you should really try to ride fast. If you ride too slow, you will burn less than walking.

I don't htink either is better. A fast walk can burn plenty of calories, and a slow bike can burn very few. It's all about the intensity you yourself put into it. If you're riding your bike off road with lots of hills... sure it'll burn more calories.

But you shouldn't choose an exercise based on how many calories it burns. You choose the one you enjoy, and will stick with.

My boyfriend swears that walking is not a good enough exercise (mr. manly man)...says that you don't raise your heartrate up enough.

I love to walk..I have not timed myself but fast enough to work up a sweat. I treadmill it and I walk outside. I can jog a bit on the treadmill, I have yet to build up enough strength to jog outside though.

I have a bike too...I just started riding this week. I get tired really quickly, but I ride a good 30 minutes if I push myself.

walking vs. riding my bike...Im sure I will end up doing a bit of both, which burns more more effective?
