Sometimes traveling ruins me, sometimes it doesn't. It depends if my vacation is active or not. But honestly, try to remember that vacations are part of life and you're embarking on a lifestyle change. Forgive yourself and move forward. Learn from this so that any post wedding vacations are smooth sailing from the beginning (like your honeymoon). If it makes you feel better I recently got back from a vacation on which I ate 6,000 calories in one day (eek!). Anyway I logged it on Spark, sulked, forgave myself, and now I'm back on the wagon and hoping to make better choices when I travel in August.

Way to go with the elliptical and kayaking. Since you mentioned you are with your fiance have you asked him to help you be accountable at buffets? It's great if he can learn to be supportive now because it is definitely a plus when you are both committed to a healthy lifestyle.

One strategy I have when I am around to much food is to start out with a large glass of water and just keep drinking all through the meal. It helps me feel full and I eat alot less. I've also been know to eat a couple of bites of the dessert and then put salt on the rest so I won't finish it. Strange I know, but it has helped.

It is very difficult and I understand. I have been traveling quite a bit this year and just keep yoyoing back and fort. Lose weight before the trip....gain it all back during the trip....and so on...
It is important to get a balance and learn how to deal with it without overeating and it is my goal.
I guess you just have to carry healthy snacks with ourself and vary them so you don't get bored. Also find some healthy substitutes to the things you like so you don't miss them so much and get overboard as I do.

Thanks to everybody who replied... It helps to know that other people have this same struggle and can understand. Today was a lot better. Had some down time... went to the gym for 60 minutes on the elliptical and then went kayaking with the group. I split my lunch with my financee, and then split a pizza among 4 people for dinner. Had some relatively healthy snacks... So I'm on my way... Thanks for your help and your comments!

Load up on salad and fruit at those buffets first thing, and hopefully you won't have room for those desserts and fattening foods. Picture yourself in that wedding dress, and just say no to those empty calories!

Hang in there !! If you find yourself on a food tour, you don't have to deny yourself anything. Just do your best to be mindful of the portion size. Okay, you ate a little too much today. You do your best to eat a little better tomorrow.

Spark People isn't about deprivation. It's all about moderation and portion control. Now, you do have to be patient with yourself and your body. You're trying to change habits learned over a life time. That's not going to happen overnight, a week, a month or a year. Change takes time.

And since you're already on vacation, just do the best you can. When you come back from vacation, you can start making plans to eat more healthfully.

Don't beat on yourself because you're eating too much on vacation. You really just do the best you can. The beatings aren't productive. they'll just drive you to eat more and more food. If you allow yourself to eat whatever you'd like in a REASONABLE portion, I think you'll find that you won't go overboard. Don't deny yourself. Try to practice portion control.

And well, do make sure you're doing lots of sight seeing and being active. No guilt necessary.

Hi ANTLIU2, actually I think it would help if you stop telling yourself that you can't resist buffets and free food. Get a strategy, maybe, if you feel since you are on vacation that you want a dessert, take one dessert and eat half of it, or two desserts and just have a couple bites of each. That way you get a taste without overdoing it. Put your fork down and take a few sips of water between each bite. Savor the taste. If you can't just take a couple bites, then just think of it as poison that will erode your self esteem. It's hard, no way around it.
Imagine how good you'll look in those wedding photos if you can make some conscious choices now. When I go on vacation, my goal is just not to to gain any weight. Keep it simple, quick ten minute walking spurts help me too. Good luck. You can do this!!! Breathe!!!

I know how you feel! Buffets get me everytime. I have learned that if I am going to do a buffet, I always make sure to make half of my plate vegetables, and only take a bit of the other things I want to try! Also, limit yourself to 1-2 plates (for instance if you normally get 2-3 plates, get only 1, if you normally get 3-4 plates, get only 2).
When you are on the food tours and presented with all the food, take a bite or two and move on to the next. That way you can enjoy it without feeling guilty!
You can do this!

I'm on vacation right now, and it's killing my healthy eating habits. I've gone on food tours with the people I'm here with, been eating 3-4 desserts (I can't resist buffets and free food!) Free food isn't free calories. I have an wedding engagement photo session at the end of July, and I'm starting to panic. Help please!
