Hope you can identify the reason for being out of control. Sometimes so much of my energy is focused on other things - stress, illness..that I simply don't have the energy to do the things I need to do to stay on track until whatever it is has resolved. I try to do as little damage as possible during these times. You know how to get back on track when you are ready.

I can relate to where you are with the hours you are working. I was doing some nights as a caregiver and then working days, too, clocking up 70-80hr work weeks, caring for home and children, and any spare time at all I spent zonked out, sound asleep. Your body can physically only take so much. When I stopped working those hours a LOT of things became a lot easier. I suggest that you focus mostly on really good, healthy, wholesome nutrition. When you get some down time, utilize a bit of it (if you can keep your eyes open) to bulk cook some good balanced soups/casseroles with lots of protein and veges in and then containerize them into single serves and freeze. That way you will have them on hand for when you need them, and it is only one lot of cooking.

I actually continued gaining weight when I was doing those kind of hours and the first few weeks after being forced to stop I lost quite a bit of weight. When the hours crept up again, so too did my weight. I DID ensure that my food was healthy - it wasn't take-outs or unhealthy choices. My Dietitian told me that this wasn't uncommon.

Hi Coach,
No, I am not tracking anything. Here's my situation. I am a single mom, and need to work 2 jobs. I work 12 hour night shifts. Until the end of this week, I am also working during the day. I work pretty much every night. I sleep almost all the time I am not working. I belong to Weight watchers and haven't made a meeting in 5 weeks. The idea of exercise is very appealing, as I do enjoy it, but I am too tired. That's not an excuse, I swear!!! Hopefully, in the next couple of months ( March at the latest) I can slow down some. I have been putting in 80 hour weeks, but that will end on Friday. Bottom line, I work pretty much every night, 12 hour shifts. I don't know what to do. My health is suffering, but I have to work to support my kids. Right now, I just feel hopeless.

Without knowing what is out of control in your life, it's hard to give you specific advice. One thing I tell all new members is this,"Don't look at good health or weight loss with an all or nothing mentality". If the only healthy thing you did today was drink 8 glasses of water, that's still a step in the right direction. Good health isn't all or nothing. It's all about making small changes. Because one small change can lead to another and another and another.

Are you experiencing unusual stress and find that you're taking a nose dive into comfort foods to compensate, you might try reading some of the great Spark articles on emotional eating. I believe you'll find them helpful. Start with this one.

SLIMMERKIWI gives some really good thoughts. Exercise and sleep will have a lot to do with it. Make sure you are getting enough sleep AND drinking enough water. I know my body holds onto a lot of "water weight" if I'm dehydrated.

Tracking food is really important, but so too can tracking what is happening in your day be a good diagnostic tool. You may be able to figure a pattern - something in particular stressing you. If this is what is happening, then identifying those stressors is half the battle. Finding out how to deal with them is the other half. I suggest that you keep a diary of your day's events etc.

Coach Nancy has mentioned exercise and sleep as other possible factors. Another one is, are you trying to cram too much into a day? This can derail us very quickly too.

I had a peek at your SparkPage and note that you aren't a VERY new member, but you are new to posting. Are you also new to this healthy lifestyle? If so, it MAY be that you have tried to change too much too quickly, and if that is the case, I would start at the beginning and just make little changes - baby steps - and allow your mind/body to get used to them before adding something else into the mix. People often jump in boots and all, and soon become bored or feel deprived which can cause them to fall off the wagon.

Can you pin point what is causing you to be out of control? Are you tracking your nutrition? Are you getting in your exercise? Are you getting plenty of sleep?

I have been out of control for 3 weeks. Up 3 pounds. And no, this has nothing to do with the holiday. Panic setting in.
