I have a big stomach, I look pregnant at 54 I'm not. The first place I lose weight is my back side. It's already flat. In time it all will come together.

Unfortunately, losing a large tummy is going to be overall weight loss. There is also the old adage that the first place you gain weight is the last place you will lose it!!

However, the one thing you can do is exercise to tone your stomach, and tighten the muscles.

Doing exercises will also help with your posture, which will help the appearance of your tummy. Ever notice when you slouch, your tummy poofs out even more?

Concentrate on strengthening your core muscles - Transversus Abdominis. You can google to learn more about it, or click here to see

Again, diet will lose the fat, correct exercising will tighten and sculpt.

Coach Jen is right, unfortunately. ;) We can't choose where fat comes off our body. It is an all over body process. To lose fat you have to expend more calories than you consume. This is why you are give a calorie range when you setup your Sparkpeople account. Spark calculates approximately how many calories you expend in a day based on your age, height, weight and the exercise you record. When you eat within your Spark calorie range, you are creating a calorie deficit (or expending more calories than you consume).

Calories are our body's form of energy. Fat is stored calories or stored energy for use when we don't get enough energy from food. If you burn more calories than you eat in food, your body will tap into your fat stores and burn them as energy and this is how we burn fat away!

As you lose weight, genetics will determine where your body prefers to burn fat from first. It may come off your arms the most in the beginning, or your thighs, or your face, etc. but genetics is what largely determines where our bodies like to store the most fat and these areas are usually the last to go.

There are 3 key components to weight loss;

1. Diet (how many calories you eat)- sodium and sugar can affect your weight by causing you to retain fluid although this weight is temporary gain/loss.

2. Cardio/activity (how many extra calories your burn)- not necessary for weight loss but helpful.

3. Strength training- when you lose weight, not only do you lose fat but lean muscle (good weight!) as well. A proper, full body strength training program 2-3x will help you maintain lean muscle/tissue so that your weight loss is concentrated on fat loss. It will also help improve/maintain your metabolism during/after weight loss.

Welcome to the site!

There's no way to target fat loss to a specific area of the body. Through a healthy diet and regular exercise, you'll begin losing fat. Eventually it should start to come from those areas where you carry excess.
