This thread killed me. I went to the store and bought more peanut butter, but it wont fit in to my budget I am going to aim for tomorrow. I did not see vanilla peanut butter.

I'm not a big Jif fan, either....I think it's the molasses?

I don't really love Jif. It's just.... there. I live in an area where we have no Whole Foods and no Trader Joe's; no whole-foods stores at all. The Jif label says it contains peanuts, sugar, molasses, fully hydrogenated rapeseed and soybean oils, mono and dyglycerides, and salt. I'd prefer just peanuts and salt. If I have to stir it, I can get used to that. I just want a really good peanut butter with out added stuff I don't need.

Whole Foods' store brand is just peanuts and salt but for some reason it doesn't separate out, and it's about the same price as standard brands like Jif. For the brands that do separate, if you buy the jar at least a week or two before you intend to open it and then store it upside-down in the cabinet, it will usually self-mix. (Put a plate under it so the oil won't seep out if the seal isn't perfect.)

Or, if you really, really love Jif, you could stick with it. I'm usually the first to jump on the "don't EVER eat anything with the word "hydrogenated!!!!!!!!" bandwagon, but peanut butter is kind of an exception. The amount of partially hydrogenated oil they add is so small that most brands have less than 5g of trans fat in the whole jar. As long as you control how much you eat and you're not getting trans fat from anywhere else, it's not that huge a concern.When my budget is extremely tight and I can't get to a store with many choices anyway, I'll buy the store brand and just be very conservative about how much I eat.

I buy Trader Joe's peanut butter, which is just peanuts and salt. (Their organic PB has only 60mg of sodium instead of the more common 120mg, which I find a little too salty.) If I didn't care about having less sodium, I would just get the store brand from my local supermarket (Jewel or Mariano's here in the Chicagoland area).

I buy the kind you have to stir, because the non-stir kinds have additional ingredients, but honestly, I spend about 5 minutes mixing it really well when I first open a jar, keep it in the fridge (and take it out a bit before I intend to use it to let it get to room temperature), and I don't have to stir it again.

I don't know anything about Palm oil, though.

Try the Krema or Crazy Richards, or just read labels to find one that works for you. I'm sure Whole Foods has a bunch, too.

If you ever try that vanilla PB - let me know! lol....I'm scared to try it ;)

I guess what I really don't want is trans fat. And I don't want the manufacturer to reduce the natural peanut oil and replace it with another oil that is easier to emulsify, which is I guess what they do with Skippy Natural. I'd be willing to give up the emulsification for natural ingredients.

I've never gotten the crunchy but since you are mixing it with a blender, not food processor, I don't think it would pulverize the bits. I hated mixing it each time and found the bottom of the jar was often a bit dry. Mixing it at once better distributes the oil and storing it in the fridge keeps it from separating again.

I just buy a brand that only contains peanuts. Meijer's store brand has one and I've also used Krema, which does have a crunchy variety. I just pour the entire jar in a bowl, whip it with the blender and pour it back in the jar. It's liquidy enough to do this easily and then I store the jar in the fridge so it solidifies a bit. You only do it once for a jar so it's not really that bad. Sure beats all the junk in most brands. I love it with apples or bananas for a quick snack that keeps me full -- fiber, carbs, protein, fat, which is a great combo.

Yeah, you can probably tell that peanut butter is an issue with me. My love for it goes long and deep!!

Anyway - just do portion control like anything else, and you will be good.

It does sound almost too good to trust myself around.

I didn't realize the saturated fat is built right into PB. Maybe I won't worry about it then.

Peanuts have saturated fat in them normally and I'm doubtful you'd find any brands that were able to remove it from the peanut butter without doing something to it even worse. It's not a lot of saturated fat, though.

That's for a full cup of peanuts (828 calories' worth), more than just about anyone who's being careful about their calorie intake is going to eat in one day, and it still only adds up to 50% of the daily recommendation for saturated fat. So I would not worry about that as such.

Beyond that I don't know what to suggest besides looking at the labels. There's lots of brands now of natural, organic, no-salt, etc peanut butters, but you don't know what's in it unless you look. The simplest peanut butters will be just peanuts and salt (assuming you're not going for no-salt), but you'll have to mix them. For example, this brand, which we've bought at times:

About 11% of the recommended allowance of saturated fat and 1g of sugar, all from the peanuts. 80 mg sodium.

Then they also have no-stir options with minimal ingredients, but in the one I'm looking at they do have to add extra oil to accomplish that (they use palm oil), raising the saturated fats to 14%, and they also add a little sugar, raising that to 3g. Still better than JIF, which has similar stats on those two things but also includes hydrogenated oils and other food sciency ingredients.

So it all depends what you're looking for. Check labels, see what's out there to make you happy.

I once tried Jif reduced fat - it was disgusting.

I use peanut butter for the fat and the protein. ok let me be honest, when I am not off on the crazy peanut butter train that is. It helps me stay more full - an apple for a snack with 2 tbs peanut butter - for a lot longer that just an apple.

But again...I gotta watch the peanut butter trigger :(

I only buy Crazy Richards (yeah, you gotta stir it) but the only ingredient is peanuts.

BUT some one yesterday told me yesterday that there is vanilla peanut butter in existence? Oh wow....2 my two favourite things on the planet, combined? lol...sounds it's got my name - and disaster - written all over it!!!

Peanuts contain saturated fat, and I've never heard of a peanut butter that doesn't have saturated fat, so you might be out of luck there.

I am almost to the end of a giant jar of Jif peanut butter. When I buy more, I'd like to buy one that doesn't have any saturated fat, but I prefer not to buy the kind you have to stir. I don't really want low-sodium, I don't think it would taste right, and for the record, I like the crunchy kind, but creamy is fine too. What do you buy?
