I give all new members one piece of advice and it's this,"Don't look at good health or weight loss with an all or nothing mentality". If the only healthy thing you did for yourself today was drink 8 glasses of water, that's still a step in the right direction. Remember, you're trying to change habits learned over a life time. That's not going to happen overnight, a week, a month or even a year. Change takes time, thus the need to be patient with yourself and your body. NO ONE ever became a healthy eater overnight, it's impossible.

This is why Spark People encourages its members to start with some simple changes first. Example, if you're not eating 6-9 servings of fruit and veggies, set a goal to eat 2-3 servings each day for one week. If you're not drinking 8 glasses of water, set a goal to drink 2-4 glasses each day for one week. If you're not getting any exercise, don't try to do an hour a day, set a goal to take a 30 minute walk each day for one week. Once you've achieved these goals, then you set new ones.

And that's how good health starts. It's not "all or nothing". it's all about making a few simple changes we CAN stick with. One small change really can change your life.

Don't try to be perfect. You don't have to be perfect to be healthy. All things in moderation.

This journey isn't about jumping in boots and all and changing everything at once. It isn't about deprivation, either!

You are best to start with Baby Steps - change just one or two things to start with - maybe swap some soda/juice for some water, and walking a little extra in your day! Once your mind/body has gotten used to those changes, then add something else to the mix.

This isn't about deprivation, starvation or skipping meals, or under-eating. It isn't about excessive exercise, either! It is merely about a healthy balance, and that also includes some of your favourites built in on the odd occasion. Just be mindful of portions and frequency.

dont beat yourself up too bad. you will stumble along the way. just dont give up. stay positive. write down daily goals that you can check off when completed. then after reaching these goals for a whole week or so give your self a small reward. keeps you motivated.

Hang in there. Its not about being perfect. It's about making better choices. I had 2 drinks tonight. And enjoyed every sip. Tomorrow I will have cake and enjoy it. And some chips. Graduastion party :) Life is to be enjoyed just in a little healthier ways.

Thanks so much for your words. I feel a lot better already just by reading what you all had to say. I am so happy i can come on here and vent my craziness and have positive feedback. It's kinda funny that I beat myself up after only the second day lol. I will be sure to come on here and read forums for confidence boosters and encouragement before i rant, Thanks again. emoticon

Take it one day at a time. Just 10 minutes of something. Soon you will want to walk or do more exercise. Eating within a decent range happens the same way. You will want to after a while as it becomes more noticeable that you are losing inches and feeling great!

It took me a couple of months to notice the huge energy difference. Days like today are exactly why I am enjoying the gym for example. Spent 14 hours on my feet and moving, lifting, carrying, baking, and preparing for our daughter's wedding shower tomorrow. I'm a little tired but not bad at all! Just 6 short months ago I would be so tired I'd hurt all over. Instead, I'm heading out to the gym for a short bit of weight training before bedtime. Hang in there and keep at it! You'll be so happy you did. Good Luck..

You didn't go over your calorie range, right? Is that what i'm reading? Honey, you should be celebrating! Sparkpeople isn't about dieting, or denial. You can have sweets now and again, as long a your main focus is healthy. You can have treat. you have a range for a reason!

Telling yourself you can't have certain things is a sure way to set yourself up for failure and self-flagellation when you inevitably give in and have them anyway.

I don't diet. I will NEVER diet. I don't want to!

Is it a waste of time to eat better? To move more? you walked more than you have in two years, you've stayed in your ranges, and you're feeling pathetic?

No more of that. You're doing GREAT! This is your first day. There's no room for perfection in this journey.

I literally JUST started trying to diet and eat healthy yesterday. I even got up and walked on my treadmill yesterday and today which is kinda huge cause its been just sitting there taunting me for the last 2 years! I did well eating healthy yesterday.. today i started out eating healthy and then i gave in to the dark side and had some sweets that i shouldn't have had. I didn't go over my dailies but... I already feel like giving up and that i can't do this. I know this is pathetic. I am feeling like i am wasting my time and that i am just meant to be over weight for the rest of my life because i am not strong enough to avoid the temptations. I really want to keep going.. but i am afraid i have already convinced myself that this is a waste of time. Any words of wisdom, encouragement, advice? It would be much appreciated!
