In the beginning (o.k., that was back in July), I had a hard time drinking water, so I put lemon in it. Sometimes, I still have to put lemon in it, but mostly, I drink 2 to 3 cups in the morning, before I have anything else. Then I figure, I'm almost half way there.

I have minor urine incontinence. I absolutly cannot drink too much of anything if I plan longer walks or some jogging. 8 glasses a day is too much for me, especially during cold weather.

You crave what you eat (drink) eventually. I didn't think I would and it is natural and easy to drink 12 servings a day now. I absolutely crave it and love it! Did I just say that? Never thought I would. emoticon

Sadly, there's a LOT of misinformation out there on the internet and you really do need to be careful choosing what sources of information to believe.

Here is what Spark People says (in an "ask the expert" Q and A) regarding drinking 8 cups of water per day as well as urine color. It states that there is no scientific evidence supporting everyone needing 8 cups of water per day and it also states that your urine should, as a general rule, be pale yellow ("like you squeezed a lemon in it").

The Stanford School of Medicine urology department states that normal urine color is "light yellow to dark amber."

Now I'm confused...I had read once in some nutrition journal, that if your urine was clear, it meant you were fully hydrated and that your water intake was perfect... it went on to way that the darker your urine was, the more fluid you needed. I think this was actually written by a medical I'll have to do more digging on the subject!

I use water as a filler for everything. When I am at work, while I am cooking, at the computer, watching tv. I save the flavored liquids..mainly tea for my meals.

I'm somewhat worried about the sugar/sweetener with Crystal Light...for my weight and my teeth. I know it is better than soda but I still wonder about that dependancy. I drink as much plain water after my morning workout and then Crystal Light enhanced water every time my office calendar issues a reminder (I'm a reminder junkie so I don't have to schedule water breaks separately) that has helped me increase my totals.

Drink when you are thirsty. Your body will tell you when you need fluids and don't forget that you also get fluids through the foods you eat and through other things that you drink besides water.

There is no reason for anyone to be so focused on drinking water and to force oneself to drink water that you don't want. There is no reason to drink until you are having to run to the restroom constantly. Your urine should not be clear, it should be pale yellow. If your urine is clear, you are drinking too much water.

There is no scientific evidence to support everyone needing 8 cups of water per day.

Clear urine is an indication that you could be drinking too much fluid. That in itself can be a serious medical health hazard. Your electrolytes which are essential for our life, can be considerably watered down. Many years ago a Specialist was investing a possible heart problem (turned out to be allergies instead). In the course of the questions he asked me if I went to the loo at night. He also asked the colour of my urine. Altho' he knew that I didn't drink a lot of fluid, he told me to reduce it a bit. he said the best indicator was the colour - pale not clear. You can get loads of fluid from foods that you eat and other drinks, so it isn't JUST water. It also depends on factors unique to you - how much you sweat, the weather condition, how much physical activity you do, if you are in air conditioning or not, medications you may take, your medical health issues, etc. etc.

Below is a link to an article by our very own Coach Nancy:

I used to struggle with water but for the last few weeks I've pretty much consistently hit the 64 oz's per day. I was a huge sweet tea junkie. All I used to drink was 2 cups of coffee and tea..and trust me that sweet tea was more than 64 oz on most days! What I do now?? I drink ZERO/none/nadda/zip/zelch sweet tea. I still have 2 cups of coffee/day sweetened with splenda and 2 creamers, but the rest of the day I'm drinking water, flavored water (4C..similar to Crystal Light products but sweetened with Splenda), and green tea flavored with lemon and/or 4C flavor packet. I'm weening myself off the flavor packets b/c they seem to get more and more sweeter, probably due to not pigging out on sweets.

I get my 8 glasses in most days before lunch:

I put 2 cups in my smoothie. It makes a larger smoothie but I get my water intake in and it tastses good.

Then I drink 24-32 oz of green tea with flavored pouch (4C) and/or lemon
Then by that time it is lunch and I walk so when I get back I can pretty easily drink plain water (at least 2 cups). BAM That's 64 oz...and then any extra is just extra good for ya

If you keep water at your desk, like any other drink you will find yourself sipping on it and then before you know it you have finished your water and will want more. :)

"I like drinking water, but drinking all 8 glasses is driving me crazy!!! "

How large are those glasses?
Spark recommends 8 CUPS of water a day... NOT glasses, as some glasses can be over 22 ounces!

Your urine should NOT be clear,; it should have some color to it.

I like drinking water, but drinking all 8 glasses is driving me crazy!!! I'm trying to keep my intake between waking hours and 6pm because this is even interrupting my sleep with all of the bathroom trips. I HAVE TO drink all of this water? If it's coming out clear, am I even flushing out seems like my body isn't even absorbing it at that point.

I had trouble drinking water, too, but it's easier now that I read this:

"...people who drank two cups of water right before eating a meal ate between 75 and 90 fewer calories during that meal. In this recent study, we found that over the course of 12 weeks, dieters who drank water before meals, three times per day, lost about 5 pounds more than dieters who did not increase their water intake."

I've also read that a bowl of clear, broth-based soup before a meal also significantly reduces the amount of food eaten.

I always have water nearby. I have a glass on my desk at work. At home, when I had a desk, I had a glass there and a glass over by the couch. Right now I just use my laptop in the living room so just the one glass. I drink water with dinner usually. It starts to add up. I probably drink at least 3 of my 20 oz glass at my desk in a day, usually more. Usually I have most of a 12 oz glass with breakfast since it's been hours since I had any water. And in the evening, I'll have 2-3 12 oz glasses, depending how much work I'm doing in the kitchen.

I have several glasses around and I know how much are in each glass. I take 16 ounces down to start the day. Gives me a good start for the day. If you are in the car a lot, take bottles of water with you all of the time. Keep it with you at your desk all day. Sip whenever you can. I discovered that once I started doing the 8 glasses, if I did not do it my body craved it.

I'm not up to 8 glasses a day unless you count my coffee and diet soda. Some thoughts is freezing water in a bottle and slowly drinking that. Also carbonated water is tastier and more 'fun'. I also use powered Vitamin C packs that I put in my water with ice.

If you make a smoothie with crushed ice/water you are getting part of your allowance there.

Somebody else might have already this, but I really want to point out that those little Crystal Light packages REALLY helped me get into the water habit. It helped me get used to drinking that much fluid in a day, and eventually I dropped the Crystal Light and transitioned to plain water. Now, the habit is pretty consistent and I rarely miss a day.

But you don't really have to "drop" the Crystal Light if it's what keeps you going. Drinking 8 cups of flavored, low-cal water is better than no water at all, IMO.

Also, I've created some cues for me to drink water which helps me finish the bottle up. For example, the program I use regularly at work usually takes a while to save, and I save my files pretty often. So, I've created a queue that whenever I save a file I will drink until the file is done saving. It's not like I'm doing anything else during that time! Also, I sometimes tell myself that I will drink water through red lights while driving, things like that. Maybe you could work some of those kinds of tricks into your day.

8/28/12 6:00 P

I have been working on increasing my water intake for some time. My husband is always urging me to drink more water. Yesterday I had 18 cups and today I have had 14 already. I drink Crystal Light-type products. And yes, one side effect is constant trips to the restroom. But it is important to flush out the toxins when losing weight. Keep it up-you can do it! We can all do it! emoticon

I drink 8-12 8oz glasses of water a day now. I only drink unsweetened tea (cold or hot) and coffee other than that. Once in a great while I'll have a juice or lemonade, but that it usually only on those times when I am out somewhere and I go to a place that serves only soda and no tea, I will ask for a juice. I do not drink soda anymore--not even diet, and I track water as only water, so I am sure that I am drinking way more liquids than average. I try to stick to only 1-2 coffees a day, because I do add half & half and sugar, so I don't want to have too much coffee.

Back in the days when I drank soda, I wasn't ever drinking enough water, and I was never well-hydrated. I have to get my blood drawn often, because I am anemic, and a few times I was so dehydrated that they could not find a vein to draw from. That was torture, they kept sticking me with the needle until they could get a vein. Now I don't have that problem.

I keep a water bottle with me wherever I go, and I keep one on my nightstand at night in case I wake up in the middle of the night thirsty. I sip on water throughout the day, and by the end it all adds up to a lot for me. I never used to like drinking water, but now I don't have the headaches, fainiting, dizziness, and dry skin patches from being dehydrated.

I use my water tracker with beverages I make using water, for example, I drink 2 cups of hot tea throughout the day & i'll add this to my water tracker. I would do it with hot chocolate made with water too, but don't forget to also track those extra calories =)

I have to say, I really find drinking water not as bad as I thought! Especially in trying to get my 8 glasses a day in. This is only my first week on Spark People, but I am loving the various ways I can hold myself accountable, and for some reason I find it super easy to drink the water because I am tracking my progress! Weird, right? I have always hated the taste of water, and only drank with each meal and maybe with snacks. So of course I was probably dehydrated to some degree. Now that I've been drinking 8 and even 10 glasses of water a day, I have had more energy, can think clearer, have been in better moods, and have immediately started losing some weight. It can't get any better than that! The only downside is having to run to the bathroom so frequently. My first few days tracking I was at home, but then had to go to work for the first time Friday and was anxious about having to maintain healthy habits. Seems like the days I work I have been pretty unhealthy - not eating/drinking/peeing enough all in favor of trying to get work done! But yesterday I conquered those demons and drank water, had healthy snacks, and paced myself. It was great! My question about tracking water you HAVE to only count pure water as your water intake, or can it include a mug of hot chocolate made with water, or any other beverage (like Crystal Lite) but with added calories?

Personally, I love water and it's the only beverage other than coffee that I've ever really drank, BUT, for those of you who don't - let me suggest CUCUMBER WATER. Put a few big slices of cucumber in your water bottle, it is an excellent addition to the water and gives it that cool, crisp cucumber flavor!

I HATE water! But I love shaved ice. So I got a cheap little hand-cranked shaved ice maker and eat that several times a day, especially during the hotter months, to boost my water intake. It's even more delicious when you squirt some lemon or lime juice on it or mix it with fruit for a snack. Even mixing some frozen fruit with ice cubes, then shaving that makes a much more interesting treat than a simple glass of water.

I had the same problem - it's so hard to do at first!
I bought a huge refillable cup with a straw (from Starbucks, it's 24 oz). I fill it up in the morning, and keep it on my desk so I sort absently drink from it all day. I found with bottles of water I never drank them, but with a cup with a straw I constantly drank water. It's a little thing but it made a huge difference for me! :)

I probably drink, "too much". Someone years ago said, everytime you go to the bathroom, drink a glass of water. I actually drink about 3-4 16 ounce bottles plus 4 glasses, plus 4 decaf coffees and a couple of herbal teas. I'm always thirsty, feeling dry so I have a drink on the go.

I have a 75cl evian sports bottle that I refill at least 4 times a day, but often more. Occasionally I add a lil squash. With measuring at 8oz remember only 2 more is equal to half a pint. Try getting a half pint glass and just refill it when its empty and keep it close to hand. You could find yourself drinking it without even being aware. Thats why I use my sports bottle. It goes everywhere with me and I'm constantly having to refill it. My problem is the abnormal amounts of times I have to pee! Along with the belly cramp first thing because I am absolutely desperate for a wee and it's built up through the night lol .

3/12/12 8:54 A

I drink a 33.8 oz bottle of water on my way to work in the morning. That way, I have half of my water out of the way before I really even get started.

The pinch tip is good, but does depend on things like age, body fat, and other health factors! Just so you know, you *can* be hydrated and still have slow skin, or vice versa. It's a good fast-and-dirty guide, but not really reliable. The color of your urine, unless you are on medication with yellow dye, is a better guide--you want pale.

3/11/12 7:37 P

A nurse taught me this trick to gauging hydration needs:

Grab the skin on the back of one of your hands. Pinch up a big fold of skin and just hold it for a second. When you let go, watch what happens. If your skin returns to nice and flat immediately, you are probably well hydrated. If it takes more than one second to return to normal, you probably aren't adequately hydrated.

Some days you might need 12 cups of water to get there, some days 4 are plenty.

Best wishes,

3/11/12 6:26 P

I find it really easy to drink a whole cup right when I wake up, even before I've made breakfast or turned on the kettle.

I take a full water bottle to class with me, and its usually gone by the end. (That's 3 cups now)

I also keep my water bottle within reach when I exercise. I end up going through the whole thing before my half hour work out is over (that's 2 more cups there for 5). I refill before I leave the gym, and usually sip on my water bottle a little while I'm on the bus. That refill gets consumed with lunch (at 7 now), and then refilled again.

The last cup is usually a little slower to go, but anything left in the water bottle after dinner is pretty easy for me to chug and be done with.

For me, just having my water bottle around makes it easier to drink. I had it on the window sill yesterday, and out of reach. BAD idea. I drank half as much as I usually do.

I was having trouble with the water too. I discovered that adding lemon and drinking through a straw helps...I get a lot more water down that way. Also, have a glass first thing when you wake up. Dr. Oz says we are all dehydrated after sleeping all night so its the very first thing I do. Then another with my vitamins. Thats 2 down before 8 in the morning. Another 2 before lunch thats 6 and the other 2 are easy later in the day. I will also say (per Dr. Oz) that everyone does not need 8 8oz glasses of water a day. Like everything else it depends on your size and things like that. As a teacher it is really hard for me to drink all that water because what goes in wants to come out and I can't leave 26 6 year olds while I use the bathroom so I just do the best I can...thats really all anyone can do right?

What other drinks are you having beside water ? If you're still drinking soda, you may just need more time to ween yourself off the soda. I've recommended to people that if they aren't used to drinking 8 glasses of water each day to start by drinking 2-4. With time, you add more as you become used to drinking water.

If you don't like the lack of flavor water has, how about adding a squeeze of lemon or lime ? That might make the water more tasty. Also, if you're drinking something like orange juice, what you could do is pour half the glass with juice and the rest with water. that way you still get your juice and you get the water. Are you drinking tea ? if you're drinking tea, you could count that towards your water intake.

I know it took me a long time to get used to drinking water. However, once you are accustomed to drinking more water, you will start feeling better about it. try the squeeze of lime or lemon.

There is no scientific evidence to support the 8-8 ounces glasses a day requirement. Of course the more active you area and the more formal activity that you do, you want to make sure you are well-hydrated.

Hydration requirements vary widely between individuals and note that if you eat a lot of fruits and veggies you do get fluids from them and don't forget juice, milk, coffee and diet sodas count as well, That being said, water is still an important nutrient. One trick of the trade for me is to begin my day with one big 8 ounce glass of water, before I even have my first cup of coffee.

I know what you're going through. Getting that 4 glasses a day so far is great! Here are a couple tips to increase to get your 8 a day (and even so, some days I just can't do it either, don't be too hard on yourself )

1. Get a bottle that makes drinking water fun. Either a fun flip top or a funny noise it makes. Using a measuring cup, figure out exactly how much that bottle holds. Most are in the 600mL range (sorry, I'm Canadian, I don't do oz - but I know 250mL is 8 oz)
2. Keep that water with you at all times. You'd be surprised how much you can unconsciously drink.
3. Attune your drinking to the activity you are doing. Say you are reading a book, every time you turn the page, take a drink.

Remember, the average water bottle (thinking Dasani and the like) are over 500mL right there, so if you get through one of those bottles in a workout or such, that's 2 glasses to tally!

Keep up the great work!
