If anything, as others have said, cold showers will assist in weight loss, not gain. It isn't the cold that causes the polar bears and penguins to have a fat layer. That is caused by evolution and adaptation, not cold immediately affecting metabolism.

Yeah, water is a pretty good conductor of heat.

Getting cold enough to shiver probably is pretty uncomfortable for most people.

M@L, actually the shivering that happens when you swim in the sea/ocean in winter can be extreme - it wouldn't surprise me if there were a fair bit of it with a cold shower too.

Thank you for all your answers. Actually some of you did not understand my question. I dont take cold showers because I want to lose weight. I take them to strenghten my immunity. But I am afraid that they will actually slow down my metabolism and cause me to GAIN weight.
But Ive read all your replies and actually the first one (sorry I dont remember your name) was very inspiring and Ive decided to continue with this practice and hope i will be more immune against colds and flu :) Its a pitty we dont have sea here and i live in a town so dont have opportunity to go swimming outside. So i just have to shower :D

Actually, the body normally regulates temperature by controlling blood flow.

When it is hot, blood flows to the limbs, and closer to the surface of the skin, where heat can escape. When it is cold, it restricts blood flow to the head and torso, keeping vital organs warm, and significantly slowing the rate of heat loss.

The body does not generally burn extra calories in the cold. Only when you are so cold that you start shivering does this happen - basically the body is trying to generate heat through involuntary muscle movement.

So having a cold shower, or drinking cold water to burn more calories, is a total myth.

Eskimos aren't fatter than other North Americans, actually. They just might look like it in photos where they're bundled up in really heavy coats. Their diet (which is very high in fat) has been linked to lower risk of death from obesity-related illnesses.

Penguins and polar bears are fat because they're made that way. Eskimos are fat because they eat to put on weight. NOt because they're cold. ;)

Don't worry about lukewarm showers keeping you fat. Think of it this way: Drinking very cold water can boost your metabolism a bit because it chills you. This is the same thing. Fat gain comes from eating too much... not taking cold showers. Even if there was some gain, 15 minutes in the shower is not going to trigger anything.

I never heard of this before but it makes sense..if your body is cold, it will take extra calories to warm it up but how much calories will you burn realistically? 10 calories? 20? If it is that low, I'd rather enjoy my nice hot steamy showers emoticon

I agree with PP. it seems your body would burn more calories by taking a cold shower.

I don't think so. If anything, it will force your body to burn a few extra calories to maintain it's regular 37 degree body temperature. If you're showering in cold water, your body is working HARD to keep warm!

I don't shower in cold water in the winter (though I do in the summer) but I do cold-water swimming. I live by the Mediterranean Sea and I was swimming in it through New Year's. I haven't been since then because it's been rainy and windy but I regularly swam in the FREEZING water all of November and December, and I lost weight just fine -- in fact, I lost exactly as much weight as I expected to (I set my goal to lose 1 lb/week and that's what I did). So I do NOT think it causes you to have reduced weight loss.

I don't know about the cold showers and immunity but where I live, we believe that swimming in the sea in the winter does help the immune system. I haven't gotten a cold, flu, sinus infection, etc. this year. Last year I didn't go swimming, and I was sick continuously from October through the end of March. Anecdotal evidence sure, but it means I don't have to be sick, so I believe it!!!

i started showering using lukewarm water and hope to gradually be able to finish with cold water. In my country, this is very popular and recommended by doctors to streghten immune system. However, Ive heard that this causes slow fat metabolism and may lead to weight gain. Is this true? I guess it is true beacue polar animals such as pinguins, poar bears and Eskimo people are fat. But will this really cause weight gain or slower weightloss when i shower just for a few minutes a day? Like 2-3min?
