The GF went cold-turkey last summer; before that she drank a pot a day. She preferred her coffee, as she said, "weak-ass" ... the usual drip/filter affair, Folgers or whatever. Now she drinks at most a cup of decaf that I make in the French press. Now, too, she sleeps better, and when/if she does get caffeine she's very sensitive to it and it gives her jitters. She also finds herself perfectly alert without it.
 I prefer the quality over quanity method, and tend to make myself one good up in the French press and perhaps half a cup in the Moka (a bit like espresso, but not quite).
 An old barista friend used to show up to class in the mornings with a triple-shot in his mug. He tried going cold-turkey, and had terrible shivers/shakes and headaches a couple days in.
 If the caffeine isn't bothering you -- sleep, jitters, stomach --, I'd tend toward the quality-over-quantity route and also keep out the creamers and such. If it's home-brewed rather than Starbucks or the like, it's not a major finanancial concern.

I have a few thoughts:
1) As long as you aren't having cream/milk/sugar in the coffee, I don't think it's that big of a deal provided
2) You are drinking enough water to counteract the effect of dehydration
3) I recently switched to black tea with a little splenda or stevia and find it satisfies the "coffee fixation" of having a hot steaming cup in the middle of winter. It's been a huge help! I know that it isn't as healthy as "green tea" but I like the taste better.

I couldn't kick coffee either. I drank my coffee with LOTS of sugar and cream. Well, that was NOT working with my weight loss goals. So I slowly cut the amount of cream and sugar I used and before I knew it I was drinking black coffee. I don't know about you, but I can't handle that. I still drink the occasional half cup of black coffee, but only when I feel I need the extra push. Good Luck!

I drink an unlimited amount of black sugarless coffee in the morning. I have one cup after lunch, them my rule is no more after that. I just drink herbal tea or plain water for the rest of the day.
Yep. I'm with you. I find I'm able to balance and decrease my caffeine consumption... and then lack of sleep and a stressful week require more... cycle, cycle.
But here's what helps me: I drink a french press of coffee most mornings. So I try and to half of the bean decaf and half potent... as I'm able I gradually decrease the regular and increase the decaf. And green tea helps me during the day.

I love coffee! I drink 2 cups in the morning as of right now. Before Christmas I was about a pot in the mornings and 1/2 at night. I've completely decreased the amount I drink. If I go out with family or friends I usually have a cup or two while talking. I can't give it up completely, I've been drinking it all my life and come from a family of coffee drinkers.

I cut out caffeine cold turkey at the new year. So far, I haven't had a single slip.I had morning headaches for about 2 days, but that was it. The key for me was to buy some really high quality decaf. I love dark roasts and I like my coffee strong and black. I went online to Gevalia and bought 6 different decaf roasts that sounded appealing. I don't even miss the caffeine and at this point, I honestly can't tell the difference.

I've been drinking coffee for years and years, since age 4 or so, but it was watered down then. We lived in Berlin after the war, and that was all there was, no milk was available, so I'm just used to coffee. Been drinking it from morning till before I go to bed, and no, it is plain coffee, nothing fancy or special. Don't see any reason to quit or "cut down", and it is what keeps me from eating snacks in between meals, need that hot drink. Hate plain, cold water, just hate even the sound of it. The dietitian says just drink what you feel like, no magic in guzzling plain water. We don't drink any sort of colas here, never have, and tea makes my kidneys feel bad. We don't drink any alcohol, either.
this is a super simple tip that you may not like if you love your coffee strong, but can you trick your body by using fewer beans but the same amount of water? if you make your coffee weak you can drink the same number of cups but with less caffeine. this is a good way to start weening yourself off of the caffeine.
Since I hate the tasted of decaf, I've resorted to "topping up" my coffee cup with hot water when I need to cut down. I still like to get the full caf hit in the first cup, but then start watering down with about 2/3's of coffee 1/3 water increasing the water portion as the day goes on.
It satisfies my need for a hot beverage, the flavor's not bad (just weaker) and it's simple to do. Takes a bit of focus to start, though (remembering not to fill the cup all the way up).
How much do you drink? Up to 4 cups a day isn't bad for you, and might even have health benefits. If you're in that range, talk to your doctor about whether your family health history justifies the coffee.
If you drink a lot more than that, you might consider weaning yourself slowly off the caffeine by mixing decaf with your regular coffee. Use a few scoops out of the regular bag or can, then fill it back up with decaf and mix it up well. Every few days, do that again. Over the course of weeks or months, you'll sloooooowwly be drinking more decaf and less regular, until finally that whole can/bag is decaf. It'll be gradual enough so that you shouldn't have any withdrawal issues.

how about tea?
If you aren't keen on plain boring tea, try something flavoured (chocolate mint with a bit of milk and sugar... mmmmm).
It still has caffeine, just not as much, at least the black teas do. So it might be a good transitional step when trying to wean off the coffee...
I used to drink about 6 cups a day. As the only coffee drinker in the house, I would brew a whole pot in the morning and reheat it throughout the day. Then I bought my keurig. The cost of the k cups!!! I now use the reloadable cup, and am down to 3 cups a day of really good coffee instead of crappy reheated coffee. I use the machine the rest of the day for hot water for tea and it sounds strange, but hot water with mio drops. If a keurig isn't an option, try mixing half regular and half decaf until you get used to decaf.
I am a coffee addict -- well, a caffeine addict in general -- as well. When you start to get headaches due to lack of caffeine, you know you should make some changes.
I "use" coffee in the same way you do -- to help keep me from snacking.
A few things I've found successful:
1. Recognize that you are never going to give up coffee completely. I've tried the no-caffeine thing several times, and I always fail. I've come to accept that everything (well, most things) is okay in moderation. I can have some caffeine, but I can't have 10 cups of coffee & soda.
2. Try substitutes. For my morning coffee, I need the full strength caffeine version -- no question. However, I've found that after my "wake me up" coffee, I can get by with decaf (or half regular & half decaf) coffee. Same goes with soda. I like Diet Pepsi & Caffeine Free Diet Pepsi.
3. Try alternatives. It is cold where I live, so I find myself choosing hot beverages at all times of the day. Instead of choosing coffee or hot chocolate (which is so delicious but high in calories -- at least the good stuff is), I tried tea. It took me a while to find a tea I like, but once I did, I've take to having a cup or two of that in the afternoon. I like Bigelow Mint Green Tea. I have no idea if that is a good quality tea or not, but I like how it tastes -- that is all that matters to me.
4. Water. It isn't always easy for me to drink 8 cups of water per day. I sometimes find myself seriously disliking the flavor of water. So, to help ensure that I am drinking 8 cups per day, I will set "rules" for myself. One of my rules is that after my morning mug of coffee, I can't drink anything but water until I've had at least 8 cups. I keep a 32oz cup with me, which, for me, is the easiest way to keep track of water. This helps me not only reach my water-drinking goals, but it also helps me make choices other than coffee (or caffeine) when it comes to beverages.

Coffee- or caffeine, really- is a legitimately addictive substance, so simply trying to "cut down"- especially cutting it out "cold turkey" tends to not work! You need HUGE willpower to do that.
What I would suggest is to try to "cut down" but don't do it aggressively. How much coffee do you drink right now? Perhaps start by cutting down half a shot or a shot in a day, and do that for a week, and then the next week cut the next, etc.
I know when you're home all day it is difficult to avoid food because the kitchen is RIGHT THERE, but try something else to fill your time, something that will keep your mind off of eating. If you can, get outside as much as possible. I know care-giving doesn't always allow that, but if it's at all possible, that helps. Stay away from the kitchen except during meal times. One thing I find particularly helpful is, actually... to exercise. Think about it... when you're working out, not only are you not eating, but you're burning more calories, too! Plus the stress relief and the health benefits are amazing.
I need some advice on how to cut my consumption of coffee down, I try cutting down, try not drinking any, but always fail. I'm a care giver so that doesn't help being home all day and I guess I drink coffee to keep from eating all day.
