California--not an expensive dish as everyone seems to have access to a tree--but the secret is definitely in allowing no air at the dish for storage.

Once avocados are cut they don't last too long. LIke the others who responded I have only heard of using lemon juice. We just bought 3 at Parksdale's in Plant City, Fl and we bought them kind of hard so they would last longer. Of course they all will get ripe at the same time but we really like them so they will be gone. emoticon

Lemon juice might help.

I use avocado to make guacomole, it lasts for a few weeks.........

Reader's Digest says to store it in a container with some diced onion. Says they will keep for 3-4 days. Haven't tried it yet but plan to because I don't like eating a whole avacado nor letting any go to waste.

Looks like everyone agrees on lime juice, plus wrap tightly in plastic wrap to keep air out.

Holisticdetoxer is right; cut in half, rub all exposed surfaces with lemon or lime juice, then wrap tightly so as little air as possible gets in there.

I've never tried it but I'm guessing the only thing that might work would be to cut the avocado in half, leaving in the pit, and then carefully scoop out one quarter from the pit side. Next, gently rub the exposed surfaces with a touch of lemon juice, put both halves back together and wrap tightly in saran wrap. I think this might buy you thirty-six hours.

I am the only one in my family who eats avocados. I like to eat them with tomatoes but I haven't found a good way to keep the part I save for a future time from turning brown. By leaving the pit in, it helps but I must eat 1/2 at a time, how can I eat 1/4 at a time and keep the remainder fresh?
