The very best tip that has saved my smaller butt several times is this: When craving carbs drink a protein shake and add loads of fibre, oat bran or a tsp of ground linseeds.
It nukes a craving in seconds.

I cook up lots of food on the weekend to eat throughout the week. I'm too busy on weeknights to cook! This afternoon I made a whole-wheat couscous salad (yes, I know couscous is just little pasta!) with lots of vegetables, as well as a big pot of vegan tortilla soup.

reminding myself it's a life style journey and not a diet. scheduling my workouts like I would a dr's appointment or any thing else. eating my meals on a smaller plate...tracking what I will be surprised how much you really do eat. putting myself on the list of things to take care of.

Sadly true about the carbs! I use it in place of rice, potato's etc. which I don't eat anymore as they adversely affect my blood sugar. I do find that quinoa makes me feel fuller longer then rice, oats or potatoes. Must be the fiber and protein.

Sadly, quinoa is also very high in carbs. I love the stuff but don't eat it often because the portion size is so small.

I like the idea of keeping measuring scoops in the products I use most. I do measure most everything except veggies.
It makes sense to keep a scoop in the oats, the quinoa etc.

Another tip: Try quinoa! High in protein and fiber. Helps lower your bad cholesterol and raise your good cholesterol. You can eat it like oatmeal or like rice.

Measuring scoops. I put them in anything I eat frequently--no need to pull out a measuring cup every time. For example, a serving of oatmeal is 1/2 C, so I keep a 1/2 C scoop in the oatmeal container.

Drinking from Ball jars. They are exactly 4 cups. I prep herbal tea in three of them every long as I drink 2 during the day, I've reached my fluid minimum. This is convenient and easy to keep track of. I have plastic screw-on lids for my jars. I also have 4-cup Nalgene-type drink containers for the gym.

Salad in a jar. I prepare them ahead of time and get all the chopping done at once. Healthy, portable, easy.

Spinach! I put a cup of Spinach in a lot of dishes. It is full of nutrition, adds volume and only has 8 calories.

the most important "trick" in my experience is to never give up. if you mess up, just keep trying. do the best you can each day. when I quit quitting I found that it is possible to live at the weight I love -- after 5 decades of obesity.

All of these! Especially being kind to myself when my ability to do what I need to do is outweighed by a desire for cookies. emoticon

I try to not keep junk food in the house

I remind myself that there is always more of (insert food here) and I do not have to eat that last nasty piece of whatever because I can get more when I really want it.

There are no "bad" foods, just foods that make me feel bad.

Never say "Never", as in, "I'll never eat chocolate again, or I'll never eat bread or potatoes again", because you will be disappointed in yourself many times over not being able to follow through. Remember, it's for the rest of your life, not until you reach some goal "dream" weight.

I forgot to mention that I have some healthful substitutes for junk food on hand. When craving chips, I head for the roasted seaweed. Do you have any healthy substitutes you keep on hand?

Eat regularly -- breakfast, lunch, dinner. Use smaller plates to serve food. Don't go back for seconds.

Focusing on my health instead of weight loss.

Never do anything to lose weight that I can't see myself doing for the rest of my life.

Don't say or even think negative stuff about my body. Keep it positive or don't say anything at all.

Don't compare my journey/results with anyone else.

Track all my food and exercise.

Celebrate/reward my accomplishments and learn from my mistakes.

Don't punish yourself with exercise if you overeat. It doesn't work that way. You can't out-exercise a bad diet.

--I try to add beans or lentils to my dishes whenever I can...they not only add great nutrition and fiber, but the are tasty, raise my serotonin levels so that I have less cravings.
--I keep lots of bags of frozen veggies and try to have some at every meal...veggie omelettes are great.
--I roast a whole chicken and use the left overs instead of cold cuts.
--I eat whole/real unprocessed foods as much as possible
--I cut way back on salt and salt based low sodium whenever possible
--I severely limit sugars (except fruit) and I don't use artificial my tastebuds has really reduced my desire for sweetness.

I don't have any tricks. I just do low carb. 210 pounds down. It feels like a trick, I guess, because I'm never hungry, but that's why it is definitely permanent!

I am new to the weight loss game. What are your best tips and tricks that have added to your success? The things that have helped me the most so far are:

Carrying a bottle of water everywhere
Eating high volumes of low fat high nutrition foods (lots of greens, I don't feel deprived ever)
Always having fresh fruit and veg for snacks
Allowing myself small indulgences to prevent binges(small bits of dark chocolate regularly)
Coming on Sparkpeople Cafe for support and to alleviate boredom (my trigger)

What works best for you? Please share, you never know what might be a gem to someone starting out. emoticon
