It did look like you put you spent 2 hours cardio in gym daily. Others who commented may not have seen you explain that you don't. No big deal . I think you're not taking in enough food. I go to gym 2 days a week (45 minutes Zumba burns 700 calories for me) and to maintain I can have up to 1600 max.

You have to keep from getting into starvation mode by eating more...... and you're lucky to be able to have so many activities available to you daily !

Thanks for link. Another user sent me something in email too. I will keep tweaking and see how things work out.

I guess I'm not being clear because I do NOT spend my life in the gym. I spend roughly 45 minutes a day max...except the two days I do strength exercise. But, I have a much more unusual life than most people in that I live in a hotel or second home in another city from Sunday nights until Thursday nights each week. So, after work, I don't have friends and family locally. And I change locations sometimes as often as every 3-4 months although usually I am somewhere for one year. I don't work at all on Fridays so, while hubby and friends are working...I do my solo activities. The rest of the weekend he and I do things together.

I agree not everything works for everyone. But, to ZORBS13, please be a bit less abrupt in your judgement and responses. :-) I'm looking for support, NOT negativity.

it's not that you won't lose fat..but don't you have better things to do than spend your life away at the gym?

My ultimate goal is overall improved health. Yes, I have some secondary goals and one is I would like to weigh less and be smaller but I think that will come with time. I have never read anything that says if I am active two hours a day I will not have fat loss. Even if I am gaining muscle, to me, logic says I will eventually lose fat because I am replacing it with muscle right?

I would appreciate if you can point me to a scientific study or article that says what I'm doing will prevent a fat loss goal. I'm not in a hurry but do wish I hadn't gained. I am willing to experiement with increasing my calories but was hoping I wouldn't have to reduce my activity overall. :-)

here's the thing: your goal is fat loss. It doesn't matter how fun and relaxing 2 hours of cardio is, it's not helping you if that is your goal.

I run marathons. It takes me 4 hours. That means I'm often out there for 3+ hours running. But my goal isn't fat loss so that's what I do. If it was my goal, I would absolutely cut out marathon running.

Thanks. Especially to ARCHIMEDESII. I probably do need to up my food again. I will try that this week.

To those who think two hours of activity is "too much", I never spend "two hours in the gym" per day. I am just being active overall. Some in gym, some in pool, some outside on my feet or on my bike, some kayaking on my butt. My hour of swimming is, for me, extremely relaxing and therapuetic and I never miss a day unless weather absolutely prevents it. If it burns calories, that is an added bonus!! :-) I know I need to do cardio like the ellipitical where my heart rate really goes up to increase my cardio health but, the other things I do are all at a leisurely pace so...I will have to AGREE TO DISAGREE with posters who think two hours of activity is "too much". I think everyone should do what they like to remain active and I don't think an hour of activity before and after work is extreme. LOL.

Hi, Alexa !

While a safe weekly weight loss would be 1-2 pounds per week, there will be weeks you don't lose. There will even be weeks you gain ! and that doesn't mean you're doing anything wrong.
Ever notice your weight goes up during TOM ? Most women tend to gain weight during their menstrual cycle. is that a fat gain ? Nope. it's nothing more than a temporary water weight gain that passes in a few days.

I can easily gain and lose as much as 3-4 pounds in a day because of a shift in my water weight. So, don't beat yourself up because the scale isn't moving as fast as you'd like. This isn't the Biggest Loser. those types of weekly losses are just not typical.

The fact is, you didn't gain the weight overnight, it's not coming off overnight. there will be weeks you don't lose and that doesn't mean you're doing anything wrong. Also, if you are exercising 2+ hours a day, you need to be eating more than 1600 calories per day. Let's say you're burning 500-700 calories. Deduct that from 1600 and that means some days you're only netting 900-1100 calories a day. that's not enough to sustain an active woman's day.

Eating too little and exercising too much can hinder a person's weight loss. I'm training for a half marathon and on days I have my long runs, I'm eating close to 2,500 just to break even for the day. food = fuel = energy.

If you want to have energy to do your workouts, you have to eat. eat too little and your body will slow down its biochemical processes to compensate. I know this is going to sound strange, but a person has to eat in order to lose weight.

remember that nutrition and ST both trump cardio when it comes to fat loss, there is no need for anyone to spend 2 hours at the gym doing cardio.

I gained a pound this week!!!

I'm trying not to get discouraged but I know there is NO CHANCE I am eating too much. I measure everything and make a point of eating whole foods so there are no hidden calories. I work out a minimum of two hours each day. Almost all days I do 45 minutes elliptical and one hour of lap swimming. I also mix in yoga class 2x per week, strength training 45 minutes 2x per week, leisurely biking an hour every Saturday and Sunday and brisk walking an hour Friday, Saturday, and Sundays with our dog. Sometimes I kayak for an hour or two on weekends the weather is nice. Again, this is a leisure activity...I'm not rowing competitively. LOL.

I upped my calories a month ago because I wasn't losing (probably due to my activity burn level) and then lost each week until this week. :-( I eat 1500-1600 calories minimum a day with 1-2 days up to 1900. Most days I am "spot on" the recommended ratio of carbs/fat/protein but some days my protein number is higher (like 30%) and my carbs/fat numbers are a bit lower.
I took the time yesterday to measure all my body parts with a measuring tape so, if this happens again, I can measure again and hopefully find I lost inches so I won't be discouraged. I have such a looooong way to go that it is very discouraging to gain when I'm working so hard. emoticon

What am I doing wrong?!?
