Writing. I still write, but I wrote all the time in high school. It wasn't for school or anything, but I missed a lot of school because of mental health issues, so I couldn't really be involved in anything, even if I wasn't too shy to get involved in anything.

Jesus Freak. I was in the campus ministry for 4 years. Only joined because Mom died that year and needed something. Found that I loved it.

Not much the first 3 years. I was still going to school (a parochial) with the same group since grade school. I was incredibly shy, withdrawn. Definitely not like my older siblings who had the same teachers I was going through years before me. (I'm a change-of-life ooops, so there was a good gap.)

It wasn't until my senior year when I told my parents I wanted to go to the public high school that I blossomed and opened up. Different set of kids...different teachers. I got into writing, helped with the yearbook, chess club, learned to play the guitar... I felt like a butterfly emerging from an old cocoon.

Competitive swimming, lifeguarding, volleyball, yearbook editor and working at McDonalds -- all in the late 70's -- I started working at McDonalds when they got their very first automated cash machines and I made 1.10 and hour!

I was in the jazz band, and hung out in the music room whenever I could. I was a shy kid back then, and so much has changed since then I wouldn't recognize myself then. Still drumming though!

Chasing after the boy that looked the cutest in Wranglers. Found him. Boy, he was a jerk. Only took me two loooong years to figure that out. : /

Then, senior year, my "thing" became changing diapers. Hard to believe my baby boy is now in high school himself! His "thing" is all sports and being an honor student. Progress!

I went to Catholic school and had to work for my tuition. They had a work program at my school and I worked after school doing things for various teachers for all four years. I earned my entire tuition that way. When I was a junior I started working as a cashier in a department store after I finished my jobs in school. Everybody in my family worked two jobs so I did my part. We had just immigrated from Holland to the US and did everything possible to make a go of it. So, I loved school, but did not have time for after school activities.

My thing was trying to graduate with a decent GPA and extra-curriculars and get into a good university! Wasn't into my high school (all girls, very "high-end", people generally nice but I didn't feel confident or comfortable) but knew I was lucky to get a scholarship and that this was my ticket to better places. Hindsight being 20/20, I would have worried less about looking good on paper and experimenting more (actually, this is ringing oddly true now!). That, and hanging with boys who went to my best friend's co-ed school ;-)

I didn't have a THING. I skipped out on gym every chance I could, and I left the boy scouts after less than a year. Sleeping in a tent is not my thing.

Wow, I did a lot of cool stuff in high school. Then I went to college and became a drug and alcohol addict and dropped out. Nice, huh?

Hmmm, very thought-provoking thread!

Pom Pom squad, smoking an insane amount of weed, and trying to keep up with the super-smart kids in my class, who were always just a few points/steps ahead of me. Now I wonder why I wasted my time trying to "be like them" and fit in with that crowd.

Nothing, I was lost until age 19. Abuse will do that to a person, too worried about home life and what havoc I witnessed, or may have to witness next. Not putting this out for sympathy because I was able to get away from that and not recycle abuse or hate through another generation. I am a happy person with a very loving family. Life is good :)...I didn't hate high school though, I just had no direction, I had to go with the flow. I worked a few jobs realized how great I was with kids, I settled into day care then had my own family and have been a stay home mom since :) Living my dream with a loving husband and two beautiful daughters with a wondeful SIL and grand son. My oldest daugther is 17 and will graduate this year .I am thinking about going back to school if my oldest moves out of town, if not i will be here for my grand baby as much as needed so she can get her career. :) I guess my "thing" in high school was survival.
