I'm impressed you're looking beyond the weight. I've found that mine goes up and down and I can't tie my outlook to that. Thanks for sharing on the message boards. It's nice to hear other guys out there.

Since, having a heart attack it is about living a healthy lifestyle to live longer. The weight lose will come. Originally, it was about losing weight because I knew that I should, I wanted to look and feel better.

Cheap bastard ringing in. Over the course of being overweight, I had always managed to slip into a 36 waist. Sometimes I'd have to rely on "relaxed fit" or a particularly roomy brand to fit, but 36 would do. Until one day, I had run out of options, it was either 38 and double XL or lose weight. Being a cheap bastard, I was going to lose weight to fit comfortably into my 36's again. But I didn't stop and ended up in 34 and then 32. So I kinda screwed over the cheap bastard in me, but I think it was well worth it.

I much prefer being strong than being fat and weak. It grew on me. I wanted more. Momentum begets momentum.

That's what did it for me. I was just over 40, and started to gain a few pounds. i had never been too heavy, but was not in great shape, and my metabolism must have really slowed down.

At my annual physical, my doctor noted my blood pressure had spiked, and said that if that kept up I'd be on meds in a few years. I told him i figured that I could get back in shape. he said, "what are you waiting for?"

I didn't wait any longer, and got going, little by little.

This one is big for me. I'm approaching 40 and I'm feeling the aches and pains now. It reminds me that we don't really decay until our 80s, unless we start that process early by not taking care of ourselves.

Thanks for posting!

I really enjoy being active, feeling alive and healthy, and taking part in life. I have many running friends. Most of my best friends are runners.
I also love to eat and the feeling of accomplishment when I try something new or something difficult.

Combination of things.

Vanity was surely part of it -- seeing pictures of myself and not liking them, preferring, in fact, to stay out of pictures. Wanting to wear more comfortable clothes. As mentioned below, 'a face for radio,' so I'd better work on what else I had.

Feeling and being healthy was a major part of it -- not wanting to be winded. To have the strength and flexibility to be activ. To have more energy and feel less sluggish.

Part of the timing was in supporting my partner, who was also trying to lose weight and get in shape. That might have been the 'driving force' (as mentioned elsewhere - the distinction with 'motivation' was insightful).

There's the pragmatic side that if I want to be able to eat and drink what I want, I need a better metabolism, I need to be more active and be able to burn off that beer or extra pile of cheese and bacon ... you get the idea.

As I've posted before, the driving force got me started, but many different motivations have helped me to continue. Right now though, I think my best motivation is my success. I stayed true and honest with the plan and I have been given all that I expected out of it and more. So my motivation is to continue to take care of myself and continue to strive for even better health and fitness since success is so sweet.

I i want to fell fit and healthy. I always seem to lack energy and don't have that get up and go I would like in life.
Also would love to be able to buy and fit into decent clothes.
Also looking forward to day I can walk around with no top on :) Be nice to go swimming or to the beach and not have to wear a tshirt.

Vanity. I want to look good. It does go beyond that however.

My father died young (not because of diet) but because of that, I want to do everything I can to guarantee that I can throw a football around with my kids when I have them. Also, I'd love to be able to take my girlfriend swimming (she loves it) without feeling embarrassed.

If I happen to turn a few heads in the process, thats great too ;).

In high school i was thin and had tons of energy. I'm only 25 and don't feel like I should be slowing down as much as I have. I want to get back to a healthy weight and get my energy back where it should be.

Also, having type 1 diabetes, i know diet is important. I'd like to be around as long as possible and don't want my disease to change that.

First, I want to clarify my theory of the difference between "driving force" and "motivation". To me, the driving force is what gets one's butt off the sofa and into a health and fitness plan ( the epiphany or spark). Motivation is what keeps one off the sofa and on their plan ( the cheering spectators, progress, will power to continue)

So my driving force was that when I heard my daughter was going to get married this coming Jan., I didn't want to be the chubby dad walking her down the aisle.

Since then my motivation has been the progress towards my goal, the fact that I am now off HBP meds, my family and friends that see how well I have done and cheer me on, my faith in God and that this is his will and want of me, knowing that if I work hard at this I should enjoy many years with my kids and future grandkids, etc. Everything really motivates me, but none of this would have happened without that initial driving force.

Awesome and honest comments. Checkout the poem below.

Our Deepest Fear
By Marianne Williamson

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness
That most frightens us.

We ask ourselves
Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God.

Your playing small
Does not serve the world.
There's nothing enlightened about shrinking
So that other people won't feel insecure around you.

We are all meant to shine,
As children do.
We were born to make manifest
The glory of God that is within us.

It's not just in some of us;
It's in everyone.

And as we let our own light shine,
We unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
As we're liberated from our own fear,
Our presence automatically liberates others.

oh man, Red Green. I love that guy. He's the guy that fixes everything with duct tape. He doesn't come on anymore here in Georgia. I miss that show.

Also, what motivates me to get healthy is that I want to run and play with my 3 year old, not be one of those moms that give out of energy after walking to the mailbox. He's not gonna have anymore brothers or sisters so his dad and I will be his playmates at the house.

Rivet, you are a HOOT! Face for radio, huh? Who says? I see your profile. Anyway, let me add that one thing that gives me motivation is that I can't stand to have to constantly keep pulling down my form fitting shirts to cover up that micheline man flab!! I hate that! UGH!!!

I'm an energetic person so I am usually active doing something from handywork around other peoples houses (I live in an apartment) - or sports like biking, tennis, kayaking, hiking.

I'm in better shape now than I have ever been, and plan on always improving that.

I want to look good for the person I'm with, god knows I can't get by on facial features as I have a face for radio, and my wardrobe is sub-par at best.

8/21/12 9:25 A

I like to look good. I like to wear fitted clothes with high heels, and they just don't look right when I'm lumpy.

I like to feel good. I feel so much better when I'm in fighting trim. Like my skin and my insides all fit properly.
