I have arthritis in my left knee and I do weight lifting and that does not bother my knee. I think weight lifting is a good thing to do.

what about water aerobics?

I do yoga - and if you have a really good instructor they should check before any class on injuries and give you specific things to accommodate your challenges and help strengthen/heal weak areas. Pilates to build core strength is also great - but again only do it with teachers that ask about injuries. Callanetics is another great exercise specifically developed by someone with a back injury and there are small movements you can do to build strength. Waterbased exercises can help with any injuries.
