sometimes I mix 1T crushed pecans with 1T vegan chocolate chips. Delicious, quick and very satisfying.

Lex I have the exact same problem. My favorite thing in the world is an ice cream out here called Halo Top, especially the chocolate flavor -- low calorie, high protein, stuff like that. I also sometimes get cocoa powder and sprinkle it over greek yogurt and mix it all in.
Augustready - I think you misunderstood. I don't think people have a need for more sugar. But our bodies will signal certain cravings when we are low in something or not getting enough of something. There are additionally simply "cravings" when we want unhealthy foods just because. There is more than one type of cravings.

MEG-NATALIA07 - in a world where most people are consuming far too much sugar and salt as it is, it's highly unlikely that many people really have a nutritional need to consume more...!
It's important to remember that people who struggle the most with cravings are not craving healthy foods that deliver nutritional benefits; they are craving foods that bring them pleasure...
Think about it - when was the last time you heard someone say: "help! I'm craving tomatoes and I don't know what to do!!".

I had exactly this type of situation this week. I was very hurt by something someone did and said and I wanted to eat everything in the refrigerator. Instead I started journaling and wrote and wrote. That took the edge off and so I started reading a book I needed to get into to get my mind on something else. I am still hurt but no longer craving food.

I try to do something else like watch a movie, read a book, take a shower or do some yoga. But if that still doesn't work I'll indulge (safely) in some dark chocolate or try to find a paleo version of what I'm craving. Or make one up. (I love to cook and experiment in the ktichen).
Cravings also occur when your body is needing certain nutrients or energy. Salty cravings are connected to your adrenals. Starchy/Sugary usually because you are tired and your body needs glucose. Savory - your body may be asking for building blocks = protein. Chocolate and icecream and giant bowls of pasta actually raise your brains level of happy chemicals like dopamine, so how can we get the chemicals our brain needs without binging? Trial and error I think =)
There are emotional cravings yes, but there are also nutritional cravings. Just be listening to what you body is asking for and how it reacts when you give it what it wants.
Fresh lemonade is good Tomatoes with lots of yellow mustard I keep gluten free bread in my freezer and toast a piece with butter. Corn thins/Rice cake with cream cheese or laughing cow Sometimes a piece of meat, like chicken is good with extra salt. Frozen grapes or pineapple or blueberries Carrots and cucumbers with ranch. Sometimes simply a tablespoon of cold salted butter helps me stay on track. A ounce or two of cheese with fruit... that's dangerous too though for me. Popcorn with stevia sprinkled on top. Corn chips and salsa. Unsweetened cocoa powder with stevia or xylitol for hot chocolate fix. Every few weeks I make a grain free gluten free dessert sweetened with birtch sugar and keep it in the freezer for when I just NEED something yummy. That helps too.

Cravings are generally triggered by psychological factors, rather than physiological or biological factors...
This means you need to find ways to "switch" your thinking when these cravings start.
Change your mind, change your body...!
As others have said, try doing something physical - even if it's just jumping up and down on the spot, or maybe yelling out loud something silly like "I don't need chocolate!!" several times.
Sounds stupid, I know, but it really does work!!

I suffered muscle cramps and bad sleep from my aching hand joints for YEARS because I didn't know I needed salt supplement on a low-carb diet. Processed foods contain LOTS of salt to enhance the taste, paleo-type foods, not enough to meet minimum requirements. Yes, I resent the one-sided recommendations of so-called 'nutrition' experts, and the fact that my doctor, knowing my diet, didn't advise me appropriately.
I just want to mention that you should be careful about dropping sodium intake lower than 2000-2300mg per day without a discussion with your medical professional. Sodium is a major requirement in your body and going too low can have serious medical repercussions. Your doctor may recommend going down to around 1500mg if you have high blood pressure, but it really is something that should only be done with their knowledge and agreement.
As for the chocolate and ice cream cravings - they definitely could be your body looking for specific nutrients. Dark chocolate is high in iron, and ice cream has fat and sodium, so check your tracker when you get the craving and see if you are maybe low in something that your body is looking for. Nothing wrong, in my opinion, with having either of them in moderation, or you may find that there is something else that works for you. Personally, I like a hot cocoa (skim milk, natural cocoa powder, and a little maple sugar) or chocolate yogurt (plain yogurt, natural cocoa powder, and a little maple sugar --- then load it up with almonds or berries).
Chocolate is actually good for you in moderation, however it has to be dark chocolate because it is said that it protects the heart. It is in the flavanols. Ghirardelli cocoa 86% Dark Chocolate, not as sweet as the 72% one, but it is so intense that 2 small squares are all you want. I buy two large bars at Walgreens. Hershey's now makes dark chocolate kisses. You can eat 5 of those for 100 calories. So go ahead an indulge ...just allow for the calories your allowed. Let them melt in your mouth and savor the taste! Yum! Maybe go to the Cleveland clinic website and read about chocolate to help you understand chocolate is not evil.
Did you know that salt addiction may cause food cravings...If you crave sweets, it could be a sign that you consume too much salt. Eating too much salt boosts the production insulin, the hormone that tells the body to store fat. The more insulin you have, the more fat is stored and the more weight you gain. Cut back to 1000mg of salt per day and see your cravings go away....

My food preferences have changed so much in the last two years that I can't really say that I still have cravings for any particular food. Of course there are occasions when I think of something, especially when I see others eat it, but over time, these moments have become just that--passing moments.
The only suggestions I can offer are (a) allow yourself time to lose the yen for foods that you've decided don't contribute to your health/goals by (b) staying off them long enough to permit your body to adjust to the change.
But I also have to add that I don't view any foods as good or bad. Everything I consume either moves me forward toward good health and my goals and away from it. The choice is always mine.
I literally no longer have cravings. I follow the Zone and lost my cravings during the first week. No kidding. I hadn't ever thought it was possible. teh best part, i en\ed up losing 100 pounds and keeping it off for good.

I make myself drink water first, then wait 15 minutes. Usually I will get involved in doing something while I'm waiting and forget the craving. If that doesn't work, I make a berry smoothie with unsweetened vanilla flavored almond milk - blackberry, blueberry, or strawberry. Dried apple slices with a handful of pecans works too. I don't get chocolate cravings. I think the low-calorie liquid helps me feel full, and the sweet taste satisfies the craving.
First I try to figure out why I got the craving. Am I actually thirsty? Have I gone too long without eating? Have I been eating not enough carb/fat/protein/other nutrient and now my body needs it? Did I just happen to see a commercial for a burger and now it's on my mind, so I "want" one?
If it's a real, legitimate craving for a piece of chocolate, that only a piece of chocolate will resolve - I'll eat that piece of chocolate. But most of the time I'm just hungry/thirsty/bored/grumpy and I really want or need something else that eating that chocolate won't fix.

I always, always, always get cravings for ice cream and chocolate. It is the thing I have struggled the most with during weight loss. For me, eating sweet fruit--like strawberries--helps subside them. What about the rest of you? Any other good suggestions for me to try? :)
