Eat a little something before you go so you won't want to eat everything that's offered to you. Stand the farthest away from the food.

I ask about the "menu", check out the most healthiest options and if there's limited available, normally bring one as it helps the others as well! Then, I may indulge and most of the time, I'm full! emoticon

Honestly, if I go to a party, I eat what's at the party. I really don't like to draw attention to myself when I'm "dieting." Don't want the questions. I just strive for moderation when I'm at a party. For example, we had a company pot luck/cookout about 2 weeks ago. I had unofficially started my diet then, but I still ate a hot dog, hamburger and potato salad (3 things I wouldn't eat at home). I left off a lot of the fatty items I'd normally put on my hot dog & hamburger like mayo, cheese, chili. I also didn't eat the chips or cakes that were offered.

look for the healthy option, I take one drink with me.

If no healthy option I only take a little of something low or lower in fat.

Fruit and salad is good but try to leave the cake and pie out.

I never did drink alcohol much so it is not a problem to go with out. The last paty I went to (in June) I only took two Diet cokes with me.

My best tip would be to watch the alcohol intake. Alcohol is empty calories in itself, but then it also leads to less inhibitions - including your food choices. You can ask for half a glass of wine, and add carbonated water to make it sparkling. I also drink water at parties, with ice - nobody knows what it is I'm drinking.

A couple other favorite tips of mine:
1) Don't arrive starving. Have a small snack with protein before you go, so you aren't always thinking about the food.
2) Don't stand near the table with the snacks. That is disaster all over the place!
3) Have fun, and enjoy the people you are with.

I usually drink at least 16 ounces of water prior to party and also have a quick, healthy snack. Then I'm less apt to be swayed by heavy appetizers and chips. I have now tried a white wine spritzer and, using only 4 ounces of wine, and sparkling mineral water and a lemon it is quite tasty and easily fits into any plan for the day.

Even if I don't go to a party I have a drink once a week to celebrate my progress!

I would go for items with less calories if buffet style, have water in your hand as you mingle with the other guests. They may pressure you to drink but you don't have to if you don't want to, and they may not even notice what choices you make emoticon
I also would try to watch meal calories before and after, say, try having a light breakfast or light supper if main meal for event is @ noon.
Also instead of going for potato chips, try snacking on veggies and go for a light dip. Portion out the dip on your plate instead of standing and grazing at the table , not like I have ever done THIS before emoticon emoticon

I am going to an engagement party this weekend that sounds like is going to be similar to a wedding reception with cocktail hour, entree, and dessert. How do I manage?
