While painting my dining room, I set the paint container on the table and forced myself to go up and down the ladder for each brush refill. At the end of the project I had done MANY steps!!!

Fran, I do that, too, it makes it more fun. What, do I need something downstairs? I'll go downstairs, turn around and go upstairs, then down again to get that item.

I deal with the same issue! It seems all of my friends are runners, but I just can't cut it. This is a great idea!! I'll fit more short bursts of running into my day too. Thanks for the tip!

I NEED to add more steps, and today I "ran to the mailbox" and back into the house...the mail had not arrived so I will do it again! It sounds silly especially since I AM NOT A RUNNER. I prefer the pool, in which I can do all kinds of exercise with less joint issues, but TODAY I have decided I need to "up my workout, and get that darn scale moving" so I am preparing to run, "in the house, down the halls, outside, any short spurts.

I carry my groceries into the kitchen one bag at a time.
When folding laundry I put each folded piece away one at a time.

Have two dogs when taking them outside to do their business watch them as have small children living on both sides of us and have a wire fence that little hands can come through sometimes dogs will nip so have to be outdoors with them and march in place or walk around the yard looking at flowers and veggies or whatever else can get in around 300 extra steps each time and enjoy outdoors at the same time getting my Vitamin D when sun is shining one day at a time

When it is too hot to walk outside I go to the mall or super Walmart and walk up and down all the aisles. At the mall I do two round trips.

My job has a sit to stand work station. I can raise and lower my desk as desired throughout my workday. I also take the stairs when possible and I walk during my breaks. I also exercise 6 days a week.

Today I walked to the opposite end of the building from the parking lot and added an additional 100 steps to me desk. When I need to speak with a co-worker I will get up and walk to their desk instead of calling or emailing.

I try to march in place during TV shows some evenings. If the show is really good, I find that I can forget that I'm marching.

I march in place whilst washing and drying dishes. I stretch whilst brushing my teeth. I bend and stretch whilst tying my shoes. ( I use arcane English whilst trying to be pretentious :)

When out doing errands or shopping, I now park in the opposite end of the parking lot as far away as I can get to get in extra steps, but only during the day. Not at night.

Pent-up housework (including recycling) is tougher and more time consuming; requiring more movement.

I live in a very small space (to most of YOU); so I am slobby enough to have a real movement session going once I commit to taking care of the house.

8/17/14 2:43 P

When parking I now park further out so I have to walk, at work I do not take the elevator down and walk up at least once per day.

Thanks to everyone for their ideas - some good ones that I plan to incorporate.

I get up and walk to the bathroom as far away as I can. 210 steps round trip. I get to work early and walk at the Fitness Center and walk before lunch. I'm trying to get back into waking up at 4:45 and exercise in the am. Almost have my exercise/spare bedroom ready for me to get back into a routine. I need help moving my treadmill in...

I have to sit at a desk 8 hours a day, so I bought a DeskCycle from Amazon, and while entering data or talking on the phone, I am pedaling away- keeps my heart pumping, and has also kept me from gaining weight!

Pace while on the phone, park at the far end of the parking lot when shopping, and take more than one trip to put items away when cleaning (unless I am in a ginormous hurry!)

I've stopped asking my five year old to do things for me, like pick something up or take a dish to the kitchen. He loves to help and I take advantage of that. Now, he can pick up something else when I do and take care of his own dishes, not mommy's. ^_^

I walk in place when I let my dog out. She won't 'do' anything unless she can see me, so I have nothing to do but stand in the doorway and walk in place or do deep knee bends for the 10 minutes it takes her to sniff each and every shrub (again) and do her business LOL! Also, I do knee bends when I dry my hair and when I empty the dishwasher. Those don't take long, but it does strengthen those muscles at least a little!

Keep the ideas coming! I'm always learning great things around here!

I workout in the mornings, but to get extra steps in I will not use the bathroom on the floor I work. I go up a floor and then I walk across the building and go back down stairs and come back to my end of the building. I also run in place while waiting for my food to warm up in the microwave. I'll even run down to my coworkers in another part of the building and say 'hi'. They know what I am doing. emoticon

I am getting back into exercise after a period of being quite sedentary. I took the advice of starting in 10 minute chunks. It actually works. I find it hard to get motivated to do more than 10 minutes, but 10 minutes several times per day adds up.

BONNIEMCC488 Posts: 6,800

Some days I don't do much other than my extensive exercise routine, I experience a lot of pain almost daily so it's tough but I do try. When I try to be more active throughout the days, I usually try to do as much of the housework that needs to be done as I can (which is never enough) because that's a way of being active. Then when I'm babysitting my nephews, I try to play with them more, move around more in general, and do as much as I can for them and around the house. That helps a lot. I usually try to get them out of the house at least once, for a one mile walk or to walk up and down the sidewalk in front of our house, etc.

On days I feel well, pain wise, it's easy to do more... I'm working on this more activity, more movements through the day thing. I will find it especially important over the winter when I can't get outside as much as I'd like.

Oh, and I've been trying to walk the dog 10 minutes instead of five, at least three times a week to give her and I more exercise. This has been tough this month with everything going on, but I'm going to try harder to hit this goal now that things are somewhat "calming" down for us.

when I go shopping I take an extra 2 laps through the store. I walk to and from work each day...not far but it adds up. I've been known to put on music and dance around the house. I walk to town to pay bills and walk home.

I walk to work and back and after dinner I go for my main walk of the day.
bringing it to tidy 11.5miles daily

I walk during my luch break (outside if nice, the hallway if not). It adds exercise to the day and also provides a needed mental break midday.

I wear the spark activity tracker. This little monitor is a very good motivator for me. I often take an extra walk around the neighborhood or make several trips to the laundry room if I know I need to get in more steps. The activity tracker makes me more aware of how active I am.

I've recently been taking leisurely walks, like just 10 mins

8/10/14 10:00 A

Park far from stores

Go up all aisles in a store many times

Make several trips to kitchen/laundry room, etc, even though I could do it in one trip- same for stairs to upstairs

We all have things in our lives that really need to get done, so I do them. Previously, I'd make excuses about cleaning my house - more important things that really needed to be done - that generally resulted in my not doing any of the things that needed doing, and instead, I sat on my couch and zoned out to the TV with a snack or three; I cleaned when things needed to be, but not as often as I should have. Instead, I clean the house every week (which includes the visible spots but also baseboards, closets, cabinets, etc. to keep organized), get up every commercial break when I do get time to sit down and pack lunches, swap laundry, wash dishes by hand when we have a lot instead of waiting for the dishwasher to load again, mow the grass instead of paying a kid up the road to do it, cook instead of sitting in my car at a drive-thru, etc. In addition to intentional exercise, I get up and do the things that need to be done instead of putting them off. It results in more activity for me, and less stress thinking about all the things I should be doing that are going undone.

I take the stairs at work instead of the elevator. It's only1 floor but it adds up during the day.
