I like Chipotle and Qdoba's; in a pinch I'll go to Subway. Many times I'll just get something at a supermarket if we're traveling. Best case scenario for me would be finding a WholeFoods or Trader Joe's to duck into!

I think I've only resorted to it once in the last year, but in a pinch I have nothing against a regular-sized McDonalds hamburger, no drink, no fries. At the mall I usually get a slice of pizza; it's a cherished indulgence for me.
When we're traveling, or any other situation that's going to amount to more than about one meal every two weeks, we will hit up grocery stores, delis, health food stores, even convenience stores with those little fresh food areas -- anything that offers something interesting yet still healthy in one way or another. I like salads a lot -- tuna, chicken, tomato-based salads, ones with mozzarella, cucumbers, whatever. Since I can pretty much guarantee the calorie count is high, I skip the bread in this instance.

Grocery store deli. Individual portions of cheese or hard boiled eggs, salads, yogurt, fruit, baby-carrots, power bars, you name it.
When i go to the mall for a long day of shopping and make the decision to eat lunch at the food court, I pick sushi. It's not the most low-cal thing (all that rice can add up) but it's a much better option than hot dogs, fish&chips, burgers, or poutine....
I'm with MNCyclist. Subway, Panera and fresco menu. I'll also grab a salad at places like Chick-Fil-A or Wendy's. Just have to be careful choosing the dressing, and I don't usually put on the "extras" that might be included (nuts, tortilla strips, etc).
You actually made the best choice already. You said that the sushi roll wasn't overwhelming nutritionally, but it was better than the fast-food options you're considering now. You could get a chicken salad on iceberg lettuce for $5, or you could go to the grocery and get the same weight of bulk salad mix with red and romaine lettuces and baby spinach, a few ounces of roast chicken or turkey from the deli, a bottle of salad dressing or a mini-bottle of olive oil plus a lemon or lime, a package of paper plates and one of plastic cutlery, and still have a dollar left from your $5. Toss it together right in the produce bag from the lettuce, and it will all take you about two minutes longer than going through a drive-through.
Almost every medium-to-large supermarket now has at least four or five healthy grab-and-go selections. Many also have a little cafe area with a microwave for customers, which expands your options immeasurably. Amy's brand frozen meals are, IMO, tastier than most sit-down restaurant meals, and you can get one and zap it in just about the same time it takes to get a fast-food combo, for roughly 1/2 to 3/4 the price. (It's been a long time since I ordered a fast-food combo, so I don't know exactly what the cost comparison would be.)
If it ain't broke, don't fix it! Your choice absolutely wasn't broke!
I love Chick-Fil-A™ nuggets! They're very obviously real chicken. Not too much bready stuff on them, either.
I like some things from Subway™, such as their seafood salad. I just ask for it on some lettuce with a few toppings. I think lots of sub shops probably have similar options. I've occasionally just ordered the "innards" of a sub and put it in my own wraps... but you have to be at least marginally prepared for that, which isn't what the OP was describing.
Really, I think the best option is a grocery. Most groceries now have rotisserie chickens, and many have salad or antipasto bars. I have no problem at all getting a rotisserie chicken and tearing it apart in the car! Get lots of napkins - LOL! And you get leftovers to take home. yay!
No option for burger-type fast foods are on any list of mine. Occasionally I can find a BBQ place... but I'm too tempted by the beans and corn and bread.

Wow, a lot of love for Chipotle. I'm one of those people that can't stand cilantro and they have it in everything. The entire menu tastes like soap to me. The grocery store food court is my go to fast food (Wegman's is the best). Otherwise Panera has a lot of healthier options.

My preference is for felafel, but I hardly ever do it anymore. They contain a ton of calories! But if I am really hungry, they are the best. I used to get them after this particularly brutal yoga class every week when I lacked the energy to move, never mind walk 30 minutes to get home.

I like Salsaritas more than Chipotle, they aren't as expensive and I think that they have the freshest items for that type of place. On occasion if I go to Burger King or Wendy's I might get a kid's meal.

Subway Veggie Delite is always a good choice.
You can definitely have vegetarian options at Chipotle. They have one kind of beans that has bacon in it, another kind that are vegetarian. Lots of vegetable choices, including corn, which I love.
As someone else said, sometimes a grocery store deli is your best bet. Just be careful. I bought an Italian wrap sandwich that was small, so I assumed it was fine. It cost me 800-something calories when I read the label! Always read first, then eat. I learned my lesson.

I think all the restaurants (Mcdonalds, BK, Chick fil a, etc) are all pretty even in their quality of a grilled chicken (or some other lean protein selection) meal. The only one I have found that nothing suitable is krispy kreme. Even dunkin donuts now has an egg white meal.

I've been in almost the same situation! It's slim pickens out there for 'healthy' fast food but like some others have suggested Subway is a good choice. (I get the sub made into a salad, no bun) Also Wendy's has some decent salads. When I'm in a situation like that though, I find myself going to Safeway and picking up maybe a salad, a roasted chicken leg from the deli, or a couple of hard boiled eggs.

Chipotle Vegi bowl is my go to. Rubios Chicken tortilla soup with a taco combo. Taco Bell Chicken Soft Taco Fresco Style. Jimmy John's Unwich no/mayo (Sub without bread uses lettuce instead). Subway Salad
Of course I usually get something from the grab and go section of a grocery store instead.
It smart to know of your options for just in case!
I don't restrict myself as far as restaurant choices, but will try my best to eat roughly the same number of calories and fruits/veggies as I would in a meal prepared at home. That usually means a salad, or a simple sandwich and fruit, veggie, soup or yogurt on the side.

Chipotle was recommended to me by a vegetarian. I did go, it was good, and - the portions are quite large. Very tasty.

If I just have to eat from a fast food place, I go to McDonald's and get the oatmeal with apples and no brown sugar. It's tasty, filling, and healthy. They have it all day and it's the only thing I'll get from there.

I have celiac disease and am on a gluten-free diet. This means I pretty much ALWAYS have a snack or two on me because a go-to meal at a fast food place is more-or-less out of the question (both nutritionally and ingredient-wise).
But I can get a big meal at Chipotle no problem (you should try it -- YUM! I only get their vegetarian option). But really I'd prefer to go to a supermarket to get something if necessary.
I will echo the Chipotle burrito bowl. I try to eat vegetarian most of the time, so that naturally limits my options. I think Subway is always a winner, but in a pinch, most grocery stores will also have "grab-and-go" style salads and subs. Panera Bread is more of a cross-over restaurant, but I've definitely run in there before for some black bean soup :)
I also like to try to keep a resealable bag of granola or non-perishable snack in my car/purse, just in case. Sometimes it makes me look like Mary Poppins, pulling tea bags and granola bars (and on one occasion, an entire bag of dry roasted chickpeas) from my purse, but it's worth it!

I typically choose a burrito bowl from Chipotle. I can put together a pretty tasty one that fits into my range without too much trouble.
ahh! Chick Fil A?! I drove past two of those and thought,"Don't even think about it missy!" I love Subway but didn't see one. Good to know about healthier options at McD's but I try to stay out of there. And pizza? Mmmm no will power to have just one slice. Grilled chicken salad!! Yes that would have been awesome! I think I was too hungry to trust myself to go in and walk out if a place didn't have that. I love those from Wendy's but there wasn't one in the area of town I was in. I kept seeing fried chicken places, McD's, Burger King, Chick Fil A, and Carl's Jr. plus a slew of Mexican restaurants. YAY! I feel empowered now. Thanks!

Sounds like you did the right thing. I just go for the Big Mac and count those calories, which means eating lightly the rest of the day. I was taking a class that was extremely long and late - I just planned my Big Mac.
In a perfect world, I would know when things are going to get chaotic and plan nibbles to take with me. Today was a real eye opener. A sudden ASAP need of an elderly relative had me out of the house unexpectedly, coupled with an unexpected DR. office call for myself leading to worrisome test scheduling. On the drive out I realized I didn't plan for myself. No water and I hadn't eaten anything. I stopped at a gas station and got a Greek yogurt granola bar and water. As the day wore on I realized I was really hungry. I contemplated where to stop and grab a quick bite and realized. There really aren't any quick healthy places out there. I tried to remember what chains had the best options for my situation and drew a blank. I finally stopped at a grocery store and picked up some brown rice sushi rolls. Not much nutritionally, but they seemed to be lesser evil. What other options can you think for for days like that?
