It isn't bothering me as much right now, and I am praising God for that!

Being tired, being upset, being in a situation where I let myself get too hungry, coming home on a Friday night and I want to unwind, being confronted by a container of Hagen Daz coffee ice cream that my husband promised to take down to the basement but forgot... but I think the biggest one is when I've been sticking to my plan all week but haven't been working in enough variety or fun foods, and I feel deprived.

I've been doing pretty good staying away from my bad choice triggers. But for me it would probably be any kind of potato chip...love the salt and crunch. Next would be to add chips and add some great wine with that and I am off to the races!

Some days, it can be as simple as seeing a commercial for hamburgers, mac&cheese, pancakes, fries.... On the plus side, it also works with salad or fruit on tv. However, there are so many more commercials for junk food...
Anything, watching the news can do it, in fact, or biggest loser can do it, or weight loss ads.

Don't laugh but my weight will trigger any bad food choice because it depresses me. I am definitely an emotional eater. And I will usually turn to sugary foods....sometimes carbs.....guess what ever is in the house. Trying to change over to natural sugar foods...fruits mainly.
Tiredness -- If I'm tired, I eat to stay awake, when I really just need to go lie down and close my eyes for a bit.

Cheezies were my junk food of choice after a stressful work day. Now that I am retired the stress is less and I feel more in control of my emotions. I can still have a tough day or feel lonely but there are things to do rather than eat junk if I stop from plunging head first into a bag of cookies.. Take a walk, take a bath, read, phone a friend or jump on my elliptical and work for ten minutes. I always feel better after those things and I do not feel better after a binge!

There is no food that triggers a bad choice. I don't think of any food as good or bad. It is my feelings that can trigger a binge. I have been two months without a binge.
I stay away from simple carbs (sugar, flour, rice, pasta, etc.).

Being tired is my number one trigger. I can stay on track all day but about 8 pm...here come the munchies.
I try to not have junk food in the house and to have good snacks ready. I also try going to bed earlier when the munchies are bad. Unfortunately going to bed at 8 pm doesn't work, I wake up at 3 am and the cycle starts all over again!
I have a hard time rewarding myself or giving myself a treat that is not food. Then, I can easily fall into the carb craving cycle.

Small celebrations and gatherings with friends and family where it's very noticeable if you are not partaking or being very choosy, particularly when people have brought homemade items. I tend to go way overboard! I have not found a solution yet, just ways to try to compensate. I try not to go to the event hungry by eating lean protein and veggies. I figure at least there will be a little less room in there, so I have to stop eventually! I also try to eat a little less in the days leading up to it and after and add a few extra minutes of cardio if I can.

Certain foods kick off the cravings: anything sweet (other than fruit), chips, crackers, certain breads, potatoes, pasta. As long as I stay away from them, no cravings and I happily eat good food and in proper portions. BUT should I be at a gathering and think, "Oh, I'm doing so well, I'll just have a piece of cake or a few chips", the downward spiral begins and it's like I'm taken over by aliens. It's happened before. SO now that I've uncovered the culprits, I stopped eating them and after about a week, cravings disappeared and I'm out from under the spell. I walked right past a table laden with goodies at a celebration on the weekend and didn't even have a twinge of wanting any of it. Now, if I could just discover the secret to getting myself to exercise .....

Boredom and sleeplessness. Many days I have not eaten many carbs by the evening, so if I am craving something, that's what it will be. If I start eating processed foods, sugar, the cravings will continue. I try to figure out what my body needs before I jump on the carbohydrate train. Some times I eat nuts, or dairy. I make my own yogurt, and if I eat one of those (I don't use sweetener, just eat plain) that often helps. I am trying to keep track of the choices that set me off, and I am learning as I go. Tracking is a great help with that.

Being overtired, being bored, or having cocktails. I can make great decisions all day, and then as soon as I have a couple glasses of wine with friends, I want to order snacks, or go home and make something super fatty or cheesy.

Anything that is salty and crispy - Lay's Potato Chips in particular!
My biggest trigger by far is STRESS. If I have a stressful day at work, it doesn't even have to be a bad day, I will be craving something, anything, other than the healthy option that I have. I try to eat the healthy option first, but often end up eating the healthy option plus the less healthy option too. Exercise helps tremendously with stress management. If I am lucky, I have a stressful day at work, I can to take out all of my frustration with a good workout.

i guess my triggers would be loneness. stress was the biggest before I retired jan. 1, 2014. I still stress over the money and how I can pay my bills off sooner with less money coming in. but it is nothing like my work stress ,sometimes think they were trying to kill this old lady.lol I have 4 boys but being boys they are not family oriented. meaning they don't come visit, dad centers around this one son and friends so I am usually left alone around here far from everything. I was down yesterday but I made it through and still trucking forward to improve myself. EAT HEALTHY AND BE HAPPY.

Late nights are a bad trigger for me - and then I just want to eat. I don't care what - but not fruit and veg! I think it's probably the sugar fix that I'm looking for when I'm tired.

I've realized over the last few years that anxiety triggers my bad eating habits....it's not a certain food or drink,it's the anxiety of the unknown,moving,new jobs,etc. Running,yoga,hot tea,baths and journaling have all helped.

My biggest bad choice triggers are stress, sadness and sleep deprivation. As a homeschool mom, I can easily encounter any or all three of these at any given time, so I try hard to make good choices even when I just want to lock myself into my room and eat an entire box of chocolates.
That's a great question! For me, unfortunately it can be quite a few things. Loneliness, stress, celebrations, vacations, holidays, etc.
... but the weirdest one is when I hear fighting, arguing or even a listening to a friend "venting" problems. I recently realized that when I speak to one friend who needs a lot of emotional support, I mindlessly reach for the worst possible foods. Who knew???

When I am anxious or really stressed, I tend to make bad (crunchy! salty!) choices. This can be exacerbated if I drink alcohol, so I try to limit my intake (none during the week, and a small amount on weekends). I find that the best remedy for me is exercise. If I work out, it decreases my anxiety like a "reset" button most of the time. If I'm going to fall down, which certainly happens, it's carbs--not sweets so much as pretzels, potato chips, French fries. I've recently been eating a more high-protein diet and limiting simple cards, which has helped kick my loss up a notch (I am not that far from my goal weight and technically within an acceptable weight range for my height, so I can struggle to lose even a quarter of a pound at a time.
I can also get into trouble if I go too long without eating. Often at work I am so busy that I eat a smallish lunch early so that I'm starving when I get home and --boom! - I eat the first carb-y thing I can grab from the cupboard. Being more mindful about not letting myself get so hungry in the first place is helpful. Good luck to you!

Carbs from processed flour - pretzels, white bread, pastries, etc.
I avoid them like the plague.
The only thing that keeps me accountable and not slipping is tracking my food intake every day.

Carb's my down fall. I get in this predicament to grab them . Yesterday morning before church I knew I would have a carb grab I do every day ,so I decided to change that. I took my Nutri Bullet put in 1 banana 1/2 cup blue berries 1/2 cup strawberries, 1/2 cup peaches gave it a whirl , tasted so good. I have done this before & got lazy , I do not know why when it taste so good & so easy to make. I have all good intentions of doing this every night.Now let's see if stick with this. thanks for your blog Judy

Good morning! I hope you're having a FANTASTIC day! I'm just wondering what triggers us to make bad food choices. And, which kinds of food do you tend to eat? How do you work your way through the cravings? I have several 'triggers'. Boredom, nervousness & stress, are my big three. Chocolate covered pretzels are off limits to me! How DARE they create a food that serves all of my addictions! (what's wrong with those people??) Over the last year, I've lost quite a bit of weight. But, in the last 6 months, or so, I've found myself slipping back into my old habits, using the excuse 'everything in moderation' (wrong answer!). I'm doing 'okay' with controlling the urges, but I want to do better. I would LOVE to hear how other people keep themselves in check. Thanks, in advance, for your input.
