Oh boy, I know the feeling. Have lost 32 pounds in past 4 months. Now I have to go to, not one but two, conferences in other cities with others. That means two week that I am eating in restaurants etc...plus the people I go with to the second conference travel in a group and are young and thin and eat like crazy...so at the first conference I can get away with eating some of my meals from the grocery store(fruits yogurt etc) but I am so nervous about the second conference.
I often hear that you need to eat 3500 calories over what you burn to gain a pound...I know this sounds crazy but I could very easily do that every day!
At home I can control what I eat and cook my own food. When travelling this is harder. I have a very hard time controlling my impulses when it comes to food and the truth is I never really feel 'full'. I have been controlling my calorie intake with my head not my stomach. I eat my planned food and then tell myself that I might 'feel' hungry but I just ate XXX calories so I don't NEED food. Just afraid I won't be able to do this when I go away. I will try thopugh.

I *LOVE* what you said at the end of your post: "It’s not a 'diet.' It’s my life I’m trying to change." That's what we should say when someone...let's say "less than supportive"...tries to sabotage our efforts!
You'll do fine, I'm sure. You're already thinking ahead!
1 weekend won't undo all of your hard work through out the week. I just went to a wedding out of town (FL) this past weekend.. I was mindful of how many alcoholic beverages I had ( 3 vodka and tonics) food choice as it was a buffet style, was salmon, and salad, I opted out of dessert because I wanted to enjoy my alcohol (lol yea I'm a lush but only on special occasions do I drink). This week I'm back on track and tracking all my food and excercising to the max. 4 days straight of personal training & kickboxing.
Don't feel guilty even if you lose self control, and aren't mindful that night or even weekend. Just get back on track when you go back to your usual routine at home. Most importantly have FUN : ) with your friends & family.

Don't worry ! Enjoy your time with your family and friends at the wedding. Just be mindful of the portions. And well, if you aren't too mindful because you're having too much fun, don't beat yourself up over it. One weekend of less than perfect eating habits will NOT derail any of your efforts at long term good health.
It's okay to have some fun once in a while. Indulge, but try not to over indulge too much. And once again, if you do over indulge, that doesn't make you a bad person. It's okay to have a glass of champagne and wedding cake !!
GIGI-NICOLE, first of all I want to say I'm jealous. I love weddings and I wish I was going out of town!
But anyways, back to business. More importantly, I think it's great that you had the forethought to pack your own healthy snacks. That was going to be my first big piece of advice. You'll just have to do a lot of "reminding yourself" of stuff: Remind yourself that if you're not hungry, you don't have to eat! Remind yourself that it actually IS ok to have just one of (insert food here), but you need to stop there; you tasted it, it tasted great, now get up and go mingle. Use your mouth for chatting up family you haven't seen in a while, get moving on the dance floor (more power to ya if you can dance! Me- I have no dance ability at all!).
But one thing that I may get some bad responses to, is that you also need to remind yourself that you are human, because let's face it, you're not perfect and you may slip a little. The key is to CONTROL IT by, as I said before, only tasting that piece of cake, not having a whole big slice; or by just having half the portion of mashed potatoes they serve with dinner, skipping the dressing on the salad, stuff like that. Do what you can, when you can do it.
And most of all, HAVE FUN! Believe it or not, it is possible to work towards your goals while still having a good time! If you're feeling really overwhelmed, or really tempted, I honestly suggest you take a bit of whatever it is your craving, and give the rest to someone else. If you're truly hungry AND craving something, do the same thing, have a bite, give the rest to someone else, then fill up on something healthiER. I emphasize healthiER because let's face it, with an event like this there may not be any real healthy choices, but there's always a best and worst choice.

These times can be quite challenging but going in with a plan (which it sounds like you are) you are better prepared to face the obstacles. I totally agree that keeping yourself from getting hungry is key to staying on your plan. One of the biggest reasons we overindulge is allowing ourselves to get too hungry by skipping meals or snacks.
That being said, focus on healthy foods and staying hydrated. For example if there is a veggie/fruit tray, focus on those foods. The fiber in these foods will fill you up sooner than the processed stuff. I also focus on eating foods I can't eat at any other times. Alcohol on the other hand can trigger us to overeat more than the foods we eat and because it is all empty calories (lacking any nutrition) and because it is metabolized differently it can have an effect on the choices we make. If you do want a drink, stick with a low calorie option.
However, this is a journey you will be on the rest of your life, so if you overindulge a little, don't beat yourself up.

I'm leaving this afternoon to go out of town with my family for my cousin's wedding. I don't know what kind of foods to expect during any point of the weekend. I'll be completely out of my element until Sunday evening. If I’m not careful, I could easily undo a few weeks’ worth of hard work in one weekend.
There’s an open bar at the rehearsal dinner tonight, as well as the reception tomorrow. There is a sit down dinner tomorrow at the reception. I’m taking my healthy snacks with me for the weekend to try to keep from becoming so hungry that I’ll eat a lot of whatever they serve.
I just really need some encouragement. My whole family is on the larger side, and I can already hear them telling me, “It’s just one (insert food here). You should enjoy yourself instead of worrying about some stupid diet!!” It’s not a “diet”. It’s my life I’m trying to change.
