ETHELMERZ: "This web site is for weight related issues, I don't come here looking for daily topics of other kind of information, there are other web sites for that. Actually, Facebook works well if you want different topics every day."

JUDYAMK: "I do not need to know some off the wall issue when it has nothing to do with weight issues, etc etc!!!!! That needs to be addressed some place else."

I have no idea why either one of you made those statements under a thread on the SparkPeople Cafe Board. This is what the Spark People Cafe Board description is:

"General fun discussion about a variety of topics."

I understand that you are interested in things about weight-related issues. Then why not go to the Boards such as "Fitness and Exercise" and "Diet and Nutrition" under the GET HELP HERE category? The purpose of SparkPeople Cafe, as I understand it, is to allow people to discuss topics other than weight, diet, and exercise. I would assume that people who don't want to discuss/read those topics on the SparkPeople Cafe Board would not read them.

Clearly there is a lot of repetition. I read all the threads on this one and found varying opinions. I asked a question a time or two (new thread I assume) and only got one or two responses. It was food related.

instead of creating more interesting topics we just need MORE topics!

Ethelmerz, agree with you whole heartily.I do not need to know some off the wall issue when it has nothing to do with weight issues, etc etc!!!!! That needs to be addressed some place else.

Could not agree more!!! I've tried launching a few, but they never last. Perhaps my idea of interesting is not the same as others....

There is more to life than food, exercise and body size

I also like to exchange thoughts and ideas.

I also concur that allowable café topics are not limited to weight related issues.

Sometimes I find the weight related issues garner the most barbed and unpleasant discussions, when non related things that might seem controversial evoke thoughtful discussion and respect for opposing viewpoints. So my preference would be more non weight related threads lol.

You're welcome SherylLDS.

I like to exchange thoughts and ideas, too. It makes the message boards more interesting.

I like the threads that you start SherylLDS.

I agree though be prepared for the ranges of responses you might get. Back in the time that those Reebok toning shoes were all the rage. I thought the commercials that advertised them were way to sexy. So I started a thread asking people what they thought about the commercials. I kid you not I got the most interesting responses.

Eventually I asked the Spark moderators to delete the thread.

ETHELMERZ - There is a diet section and a fitness section that talk about those things. The Cafe is for fun, general topics that interest all including maybe weight related topics. It is not limited to that.

This web site is for weight related issues, I don't come here looking for daily topics of other kind of information, there are other web sites for that. Actually, Facebook works well if you want different topics every day. Spark People is about weight, health, healthy food, eating disorders, and so forth. I wouldn't come here to read about knitting, for example, or country music or something. It's like when you go to work, and talk with the same people each day, can't be exciting all the time, yakking with them, either.

MKMMARTY...for an eye opening experience ... open a thread...
Just be prepared for the range of responses you get. I have received hate mail. Some people even criticized me for using a smiley emoticon....
what's up with that????

and this quote sums it all up

"There are some people who always seem angry
and continuously look for conflict.
Walk away from these people.
The battle they're are fighting isn't with you, it's with themselves."

MKMMARTY: I hope you have had time to check out some of the new threads. I think there is some creativity to them. I admit that it seems often threads which require more than a few words to answer often die an early death. Many people, I assume, have busy lives where they can reply, "yes" - "no," "positive" -" negative," give one number, etc but don't have much time to give detailed replies.

I also think maybe at times that "who" is more important than "what" in threads started. In any case, your point is legitimate. Perhaps, some people are too intimidated to post because they do not know how to react to someone who gives a negative response. Actually, I find threads where people have argumentative, but informative, discussions to be rather fruitful and entertaining. From my own perspective, it has been rather important for me to make decisions about health and exercise based on reading and researching two (or more) sides to arguments/disagreements/opinions. I then make my decisions based on what I feel is best for me. Or I continue to read and research.

My favorite threads, though, are those where members share personal experiences and give some view of their daily lives.

I agree it seems to be very repetitive and boring. I like threads where I can learn about other people. Ex. Feelings, Habits, Hobbies. I don't care to know how much Water someone else drinks, or what they are having for Dinner.

I have started my own topics in different message boards; I think most people like answering the food or exercise related threads though.

I check the threads on most of the Message Boards; and I reply to quite a few, such as "what did you have for lunch" or "for supper," etc. And I reply to things like "what fruit" or "what vegetable did you eat today." I have noticed a lot of duplication on things like "points" and "the wheel," quotations, "walking," etc. However, since most of them get a lot of responses, they are clearly popular.

I have tried starting a few threads with original topics, but for the most part they don't seem to gather a lot of interest. That's not going to keep me from occasionally trying new ones.

a lot of people feel too intimidated to start a thread. People can be rude or bully the thread starter then they never try again. Or a person posts a legitimate question and no one responds. I agree with other that have said, if you don't like the threads start one yourself.

@Sheryl: I love the threads you start, don't stop!

Responding to general topic, I wanted to offer my personal excuse for not starting any threads at all in the café, interesting or not.

Lol, this is really childish but when I started my first thread in the café in years and years (been on and off spark a long time), it was immediately removed.

This kind of bothered me as it was a "What are you grateful for today ..." type post that is dear to my heart as I find the constant exercise of gratitude statement making to be not only interesting but immensely therapeutic. I did not know there was a really old gratitude thread on here with thousands of replies, as people apparently rarely post on it these days.

It was mentioned to me in another post that was probably the reason my post was removed, that two gratitude threads were not needed. Lol, but to be honest I don't see that there is even one that is active and I think the topic of gratitude IS very interesting and a nice start to a day.

I actually felt kind of hurt that my little attempt at a positive contribution here was instantly rejected. Lol, silly, isn't it?

There is one poster who used to start frequent threads that I thought were very interesting and creative and some sort of background flack seems to have been directed to that poster. Not sure what that is about and basing this only on comments.

So, anyway, it is not worth it to me to post new threads here, could be bad for my blood pressure lol.

I'm surprised at some of the angry responses I've gotten on a few of the threads I've started. I sometimes wonder if the intent was to shut the thread down. I even had one person send me hate mail. But when I have suggested that people start a thread...they don't.

I love it when somebody posts something interesting! I agree there is nothing more boring than a question like "did you walk today?" or did you "overeat today?"

But I love it when somebody asks about thought-provoking topics and controversial issues (not politics, I really don't like politics). The issues can be related to weight-loss and health, or not.

I wish Spark discussions were a little more threaded so you could respond to somebody who responded to the original. It says what response you are replying to, in the response window, but when anybody is reading through all responses, it just appears that you are responding to the initial question, rather than any particular thought another member stated. I wish there was a way to click "read" or "like" or something so that when you write something you would know people read it, even if they didn't respond to what you said.

I will do my best - soon - I am going to give an excuse - right now my life is wrapped up in a very busy - stressful job that is ending in two weeks - and there was second death in the family within the last 3 months - and I am using most time a satellite internet connection - and I get inpatient waiting for it.
This all changes in a few weeks...

Why not lead by example? Start a creative topic and see what happens.
