I also LOVE LOVE LOVE the circus & performers. I always imagine myself being a performer ( bcuz of my funky personality ), but that's just a DREaM in my head ! . I started HULA HOOPING - this is a very basic move that even a 90 yr old lady can do ( w/out back injuries). I hooped for 6 months now & can do a few tricks w/ my hand. I'm getting better each day as I practice . So when I practice at home , I pretend I'm a circus performer & just do HulaHoop tricks at home. HulaHooping melted 3 inches off my waist , lost 7 lbs & healed my LOW back pain. TRY A HULA HOOP !!!! I recommend this ! Just for being silly & having fun working out.

Archi is right about everything available here on Spark, all the exercise videos are free (my most favorite thing!) and they even include things you can do sitting down, plus "office workouts".
I think with a lot of those performers (and ballet dancers) it's not only their genes, but also they start at any early age. So for me as a middle-aged fat lady who's spent most of my life not being really active or exercising or taking any type of dance or gymnastics classes, it's going to be a looooong journey to gaining strength and flexibility.
BUT-- the time is going to go by anyway, whether I get off my butt or not. So I've chosen to get up and give things a try. I may never be able to do a lot of things (the thought of a back bend like Archi can do makes me sort of nauseous) but I can most certainly do better than I'm able to, now.
I'm really grateful for all of the reply's but a lot of what ARCHIMEDESII said is what I am looking for, I am not necessarily looking to become an acrobat myself but wondering what the basics for training to be similar to one would be and probably more then that, that I could become myself despite my current physical stature. I believe that I need to be educated in a good foundation of basics to get my started.
See I did this ladies bootcamp fitness thing that would meet at like 4-5 in the morning before work and it was intense and I did it for 3 sessions (approximately 6-7 months) and while I enjoyed it, I started to get really frustrated towards the end because while I was loosing a little here and there and apparently gaining muscle back I wasn't seeing any physical change or really feeling like my clothes fit better of anything and I became defeated that I was always going to be fat and awkward. I mean I was doing everything I was supposed to diet wise, only occasionally not eating probably enough but while the other 10 ladies were losing and showing I stayed the same. I would try it again but I am little poor right now.
Either way I was thinking that yoga or pilates would be a good way to build a base but I will definitely try those other workouts as well! I know it will take longer time to buld the flexibility but I am hoping it will help me inspire to try other thing to help me find some exercise to help me lose the way I look right now. Thanks again though to all of you for replying to this!
Maybe you should check out some more alternative forms of exercise. How about a pole dancing class? Those ladies have crazy upper body strength and are quite flexible as well.

If you want a lean flexible body like those on that PBS special on the Circus, you need to have their parents. Part of the reason those people are able to do what they do is because they have the body types for those particular disciplines. Ever wonder why it is ballet dancers all seem so lean and lithe ? It's because those body types are chosen for ballet troops.
However, there is absolutely no reason you can't improve your flexibility, strength, coordination, etc... One of my goals in yoga was to be able to a back bend. It took me a couple of years of practice, but I now can do a back bend. I haven't been able to do that since I was a kid !
Taking yoga can help you increase your flexibility. It won't happen overnight. Any good yoga instructor will tell you that success in yoga is measured in milimeters, not inches.
Can you increase your strength ? You betcha. a good strength training program can help you increase your strength. Where to start ? Why not check out the fitness section. Coach Nicole has a bunch of short 10-15 minute workouts you can do at home. try a few.
You can do this, but you have to start with the basics before you can start thinking about more advanced things that circus performers do. Remember, those folks have been honing their crafts for years and years. it's their job to be that strong or flexible. so, they are constantly training for hours. the average person doesn't have that luxury.
But, yes, you can change your body. Will you become an acrobat ? How hard are you willing to work to achieve your goal ? Even if you don't become an acrobat, I would think that over all improvement of your health and well being would be pretty fantastic.
If you want to be strong, you need to increase lean muscle. that means you need to do some strength training. If you want to be flexible, you need to do some yoga. If you want to improve your balance, yoga or tai chi. there are many different things you can do.
start small. how about starting with one of Coach Nicole's 10-15 minute strength workouts if you've been sedentary for a long time. Don't try to do everything at once or you will end up frustrated.

Hello everyone! I am having a dilemma here and not having any luck on the research front. Mainly because I am not even sure where to start! So I am writing to you all on here to see if anyone can help me out or point me in the right direction.
Basically I was inspired by watching a recent docuseries called 'Circus' on PBS. I really admired all of those performers who can bend and move the way they do and began to wonder if it was possible for someone like me to do that too. The problem is, I believe I am pretty much the exact wrong body type. I have poor upper body strength and pretty much no flexibility from being over weight my entire life.
So I am wondering, with a lot of hard work, pratice and determination would it be possible to change myself so that I could develop a more lean and flexible body type like that? And if so where would I start and what would I do? I am not sure what to look up, I feel like it would be something along the lines of strengthening my core, pilates, ect. coupled with a diet plan but like I said I am not sure.
If anyone has any ideas, opinions or information to share I would be eternally grateful. I am looking for exercises I can do at home or at my office. I work during the day as a seamstress and wardrobe head where I have access to moving and lifting some boxes and also doing some other movement based items on my breaks (Outside of that I work as a costume designer). So anything I could fit into that would be helpful too.
