Thank you every one for the great suggestions I hadn't thought of table push ups or step push ups but will have to try it. I haven't done the plank in awhile...or any strength training for that manner but I'm trying to gradually work my weigh into it. I will have to start doing some planks.

As others have noted, wall push ups are a great way to build upper body strength. Another way to do push ups is with a table. Try table push ups too.

Are you doing plank ? Another good exercise to help you do military style push ups is the plank. If you can't hold plank on your hands, try modified plank.

Don't forget the old cliche,"how do I get to Carnegie Hall ?" Answer ? practice, practice, practice.

The Spark article "You Can Do Perfect Pushups"
sets out how to train towards regular pushups.

And it includes wall pushups as one of the steps towards this goal.

- awesome idea! Thank you!!

I have been using the Smith machine at the gym. I use the bar to rest my hands on and have been lowering it.

Wall pushups are also excellent!

Absolutely, and if you have stairs in your house, you can progressively put your hands on lower steps until you can do full pushups.

Are wall push ups a good route to go if I don't have the strength to do a regular push up ?
