I lost 60 lbs. by walking and eating a healthy diet. So yes it can be done. Just remember you can't out walk a bad diet.

I had great success with walking 6 days a week for 30 minutes and paying attention to my calories and portion sizes for about a year.

Yes, you need to watch your calorie intake, as well. I was walking every day, and on weeks where I ate more, I ended up gaining weight!

For most people, weight loss is 80% nutrition and just 20% exercise. It's difficult to lose 90 lbs through exercise alone, without also tackling the intake side of things. To put things in context, a rough rule of thumb is that you burn about 100 calories per mile walked, and a pound of fat represents about 3500 calories.

However, walking is a very good exercise - simple and requires no special training or equipment.

If you combine watching your intake with walking 2-3 miles a day, then that can create a good calorie deficit overall.

Also, any good exercise program includes BOTH cardio and strength training. Walking certainly ticks the cardio box, but you should add some strength training as well.

I have done very little other than walking twice a day for about 7wks now. I have watched my calorie intake and done a few things here and there like kettle bell classes and light aerobic here and there. I have lost 38 lbs and 7 inches. I walk two times a day about 15-24 minutes each time. I think it is possible it just depends how quickly you want to lose the weight. Good luck.

I need to lose 90 pounds total. Can you lose that much by walking? If so how much a day?
