I agree with portions - in Europe, the portions are more like we used to have here in the states, before plates became platters and bowls became troughs.

Do be sure to eat your veggies. :-) I've always found this is crucial to weight loss. I try to eat fruits and/or veggies with EVERY meal - this can usually be done in Europe, as well, though I don't know about breakfast so much over there. (In France, breakfast is pretty much bread and coffee. Am guessing Italy is similar but don't really know.)

With all the walking you should be fine. Let us know how you did!

I hope you had a wonderful time. Any tips? I'm going in Sept. and would like to get ten more pounds off before then. I'm not worried about over eating on this trip since the days will be filled with so much walking, and walking hills, which I am not used to. I am a little concerned about all the stairs we will be climbing as I have a bad knee when pushed to it's limits.

Have a WONDERFUL time in Italy !!! I've been twice. I love it !! And guess what ? Each time I've been, I've lost weight ! Why ? Portion control. Keep in mind, that yes, Italians love their bread and pasta. BUT, also keep in mind that they don't have the obesity issues that we have here in America. Believe me, when you get there, you're not going to see morbidly obese Italians. That's because of portion control. When you sit at a restaurant, you are not going to be served the gut busting portions you get here. the portions will be much more reasonable.

Also, they eat more servings of fresh fruit and veggies. the fruit is sooooo tasty. Eat lots of fruit and veggies !

Yes, eat the bread because you're not going to find anything like that here. Don't feel guilty ! enjoy yourself. because honestly, you're NOT going to derail any of your efforts at good health or weight loss in a week. Be mindful of your portions. Try to eat like a local instead of like an American. Walk !! Italians do a lot of walking.

Mostly, enjoy yourself !! And one piece of very important advice, try to dress well. Try to where nice clothing because appearance is imporant there. If you dress like a slob, they are going to treat you like one. If you dress a little better, they'll treat you a little better. So, consider tossing a scarf around your neck. Wear a nice costume jewelry pin. try to avoid wearing sneakers and if you do wear them, make sure they're new.

When you do into the Vatican or any other holy place, make sure you wear a shirt that covers your shoulder. No sleeveless shirts. don't care how hot it is. You can't wear tank tops or short shorts in the Vatican. They won't let you in if you're not "covered" properly.

Oh and DO eat the gelato. that's absolutely amazing.

Most hotels have gyms these days. Perhaps you could check in for a workout a couple of times.
European servings also tend to be smaller than American servings and I agree that you will probably be doing a LOT of walking.
Enjoy yourself!!!!

Enjoy the vacation! What a great opportunity and experience for you! I would guess that you will do a lot more walking over there then what you may normally do while you are in your daily routine. Enjoy the experience and take lots of pictures.

Be well,

I'm going on vacation tomorrow for a week. I'm an admitted carboholic and I'm going to the land of delicious carbs...Italy. I want to enjoy this trip since this is the trip of a lifetime for me. But I also don't want to destroy all my hard work (as of this morning I'm down 10 pounds, which is halfway to my goal). Any tips for healthy eating on my vacation? Thanks in advance!
